2009 ML550 HID

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know if all 2009 Ml550s came with HID headlights as standard equipment? or did it only come with the "lighting package" that includes adaptive lighting and LED tail lights?

Thanks
Michael

Not sure but my 09 only has Xenons and HID's. I don't have LED tail lights or adaptive corning lights.

On my 2011 ML550 the "Bi-Xenon" headlamps, with "Active Curve Illumination" are part of the "Lighting Package". The tail lights are LED, I guess same as on all 2011 models.
Later I noticed that the "Active Curve Illumination" is in fact just turning on individual fog lights on the side where the steering wheel is turned to - left or right side. - Nothing else!

It also swivels the fog light depending how far the steering wheel is turned.

First time when I noticed that the Fog Lights are in fact the advertised “Adaptive Curve Illumination” system, I was a new MB driver. While parking inside a garage, I got off the car to check on how I parked/positioned the car. Imagine my surprise (and panic) when I noticed that one fog light was off while the other one was dimming, not fully turned on or off. From that moment I start ‘spying’ on my lights -headlights & fog lights.

Initially from the MB literature, I thought that the headlights are supposed to swivel. Later I noticed that the lights are fixed. And inside parking spaces I noticed that the fog lights are changing intensity, but thought that they do not move.

There is any way to see how the fog lights swivel? I would appreciate if you can please recommend any way I could check or see how the fog lights swivel. The ownership of this car is a continuous discovery process.

Thank you

If you have headlight washers, then you have Xenon's. The low beams do swivel as you turn the wheel. It is very subtle, and most noticeable on dark or foggy roads with slight movement of the wheel at slow road speeds.

The fog lights are also used as cornering lights and light the direction you are about to go under certain speeds. They will each light and dim to off depending on the direction you go. It is even smart enough to switch to the opposite cornering light when you select reverse. Fog lights don't swivel otherwise.

I have noticed the light moving as I turn the wheel and I just assumed it was the fog lights. I stand corrected.

Actually, my brain is kind of our of gear as I have removed a fog light to replace the trim and I know perfectly well they don't swivel. Senility, here I come...

Personally I like, and wanted, the Daytime LEDs. LEDs provide a 'modern' and nice look. Since they are not available in the ML550 trim, I considered replacing the existing Fog Lights.

Later reconsidered the idea, and gave up the 'beauty' for the 'practical' use of fog lights in certain driving conditions.

Any considerations and/or advice on the subject, since it seems that you already did it?

Thank you.

2009 ML550 LED headlight not bright enough

Hello. I own a 2009 ML550 and my model did not come with XEON lights. It is 2014 and the headlights are so weak I can not see at night unless I use my brights. Does anyone know if I can change my LED headlights to XEON? I called Mercedes service and they said I could not switch my LEDs to XEON.

These headlights are so dull i want to sell my ML550.

You can change any headlight to an HID xenon headlight. Your headlight has a bulb, doesnt matter what kind of bulb it is. You can buy a conversion 'kit' to put a new HID xenon bulb in your light. This is the fundamental component of what the factory xenon headlights are made up of. The factory light may have some different reflective structure, but simply putting the HID bulb in a non HID fixture is nearly as good and gets the job done.
There are many dealers who sell these. Some are several hundred dollars, some are fifty dollars. I first started converting headlights because of a dealer who started advertizing here on mbworld. Look up HIDExtra.com, if you dont understand how to look up your car, call them and discuss it.
Basically, if you have a.. say a 9007 bulbs, you buy the kit to convert a 9007. You get 2 bulbs that fit into the 9007 hole, and you get 2 Ballast modules to hook to the bulbs and make the correct power for the HIDs.
Every car has a 12volt wire, positive and negative going to the headlight. The kit has wire connectors that plug to the factory wire, then to the ballast then to the bulb. And there you are, it works.
You have to choose the HID color 'temperature' , your choice is 3000k to 12000k and the colors go from dull white up to bright blue or purple. I find 5000k is light blue, 6000k is bluer, 8000k is noticably blue . after 8000k the brightness does not increase.I like the 8000k on my car. Some cars wiring is funky and you may have to do some modifying to get the wiring right, but supposiedly plug and play. You need fundamental mechanical and electrical skill to do it your self.
