Steering Reservoir hose
Can anyone confirm that the hose circled in the picture, if disconnected at the cooler/radiator side will leak coolant if removed? i didnt think PS return hose connecting the reservoir side to the radiator had coolant passing through.
Thanks for any insight if anyone replaced that hose.
Part of the radiator is used as a power steering cooler. It is separated from the coolant side completely -- the radiator hoses carry coolant to and from the radiator. Think of the radiator as two separate units built into one (radiator - coolant AND power steering cooler - P/S fluid)
If you remove that hose, most or all of your P/S fluid will leak out of the system. It is at the very bottom point of the system, so it will drain the reservoir, rack, and cooler entirely.
Having said that, the P/S fluid capacity of the system is very small (between 1 and 2 liters if I remember correctly). So the best thing to do is order extra P/S fluid, drain the entire system when removing that hose, then fill up with brand new fluid. Along with replacing the hose, you have basically done a flush (ok just drain and refill, but not too far off) of the system. This fluid gets old and gunky over time, so new fluid is a great thing to have.
I am planning to drain/refill my system soon by removing the bottom clamp (#160 in the picture above).
