Timing cover removal - timing skipped?

hello all, I just finished doing my timing chain on my 2008 ml320 cdi with om642 engine. I did the method of which you link to new chain to the old chain and I somehow think my timing for the balance shaft or the other set of cams has got out of whack. I triple checked the side I was working on that the cam gears where aligned when the crank pulley was set at 0T so I’m confident it is not that side.

The slapping at startup is now gone but it now has a fairly audible tick that was not there before. The engine doesn’t seem to run rough. It starts up fairly quick and runs but the ticking makes me think that I somehow messed up the timing, which brings me to the next question. Is there a way to confirm timing without complete disassembly or do I have to remove both valve covers and the timing cover :/.

If so, does anyone have directions on how to remove the timing cover? I could figure it out but it’s always nice to read over something before I get in to deep . Thanks in advance. I will post of a video of the sound once I’m back at home.

This is not an easy procedure and requires special tools.

Here is a link to my YouTube video of the sound

yes I know it requires special tools to complete time from scratch. I was more wondering if there is a peep hole I can check through of some sort to atleast get a visual of what is going on inside without a complete disassembly which I will do if I need to!

If you read the instructions?????you were supposed to place cyl. #1 at top dead center and then lock it in place with the tool. Did you?.

No I did not lock it in place. The diy post that shows how to do it showed no mention of it. I did mess of the timing initially on the passenger side, but I fixed it after I ran the new chain through. The passenger side I’m confident is in time it’s the other side that I think had skipped a tooth when I was feeding the chain through. I did not have both sides off when I did this as per the diy post in the diesel section.

If the balance shaft shaft is out of time what would be the symptoms? Would it just be a shaky engine? Or does it serve another purpose. Thanks again.

If you want to save your eng. you will have to do it all over again but this time following instructions, not Youtube.

thank you for your very vague answer and sidestepping my actual questions. I didn’t use YouTube btw, if you actually read my posts maybe you would have known that.

The video you supplied is from YouTube, btw.

Wasn't it obvious to you that the timing is out of sync & all screwed up?

I used YouTube to host my video so you could hear the sound... I did not use YouTube to figure out how to do the timing chain is what I meant.

Again, did you even read my posts and my actual questions? Cause you have not answered any of them. I’ll ask them again.

#1 - is there a way to confirm timing Without removing the valve cover so I can atleast get an idea where the cams and balance shaft are in relation to the crank?

#2 - does anyone have a write up of how to remove the timing cover?

Thank you that is what I was looking for . Unfortunately I do not have a advanced scanner I only have the torque app with a Bluetooth obd adapter so I unlikely will by able to see timing with it so I guess I’ll have to manually do it.

Yea it probably is. I’ve never really neeeded anything but the torque app as it does work very well and has lots of options. I never thought I could actually get a better scanner for a decent price since the torque app is already great for basic scanning and reading needs.
