2010 ML350 Alternator replacement
My 2010 ML needs a new alternator, but I'm not trying to pay dealer prices. From what I can see looking at the way its mounted...it looks like it is only held in place by 4 bolts, the power post on the rear, and the little wiring clip and connector. The bolts don't look like standard sockets though. Does anybody know what type and size attachments are used on these mounting bolts? Almost looks like a star? Also, if anyone can link to, or post a pdf of the steps involved as well as tools required I would really appreciate it. I bought the part for under $200 and I want to attempt the installation on my own. Thanks!

Thanks for that, but I was looking for the steps involved in removing the alternator itself...not taking it apart. I'm looking for how to release the belt tension, and also what size torx socket I need to pick up to loosen the 4 mounting bolts. The pdf that you posted looks more like how to take it apart once it is removed.

yes youre already helping me with that. I have yet to troubleshoot the next steps you suggested. I was going to continue working on the horns this week but the alternator gave out.
