Tip: Clean you MAF sensors

Today I cleaned both my MAF sensors with special MAF cleaner and replaced both air filters.
Result:
  • Significant better MPG
  • Much better respons and better acceleration
  • I have to wait to see if the car does its regeneration less often

Amazing how much filth was accumulated on those sensors

If your air filters were clogged, I'd say that is where your mileage and acceleration increase came from. My Dmax LOVES a clean air filter, almost as it loves cold dense winter air.

Actually the old air filters were still clean, almost new, I have no cue when the previous owner replaced them but seems recent,
The MAF sensors at the other hand were pretty filthy like there was an hardened out oil film on them. I am pretty convinced the cleaning did the trick.

Yep, that’s been a thing since the 80’s… (oops just dated myself lol). Cleaning the MAF every year or so will keep it clean and fast reacting. 👍

Is there a risk of damaging it in the process?

Use proper MAF cleaner (CRC makes one) and spray the MAF element in a way where the fluid & gunk drips off (and not into the electronics lol). Taking care is the order of the day.

And when you put it all back together, be sure it all properly seals up or else you’ll get a check engine light. But it’s all common sense.

Yep, found that out. My model of MAF construction is difficult to connect to the air filter. It easy to fit it wrong with the engine light on as the result. Been there done that
I found it easier to screw in the air filter housing as the last part during install,

Former R230, W220 and W221 owner
Changed my cabin and air filter yesterday. Went ahead and sprayed the MAF sensor down to after seeing this thread.
