2010 W164 oil consumption oddity
My 2010 V6 Diesel is acting weird.
With no oil leakage whatsoever the engine uses something like 500ml every 1.000 miles.I can live with that.
But every now and then the engine seems to start using more oil, like 500ml every 300-500 miles. The engine also seems to regenerate the DPF more often in those situations.
It does that for a while and then goes back to 500ml every 1.000 miles..
Anyone else encountered this weird behaviour?

blow by
“1. warm engine fully then let idle
2. remove oil filler cap - most (all? even brand new?) diesels will have some blow-by vapor coming out of the filler tube but it should not be a huge amount.
3. have someone rev engine slightly - the blow-by vapor should reverse direction and be sucked back into the filler cap, if so, the engines passes the "blow-by check".
If the blow-by vapor does not reverse direction (and can also increase), then engine fails the "blow-by check" and may have problems.”

I thought that something was terrible wrong with my engine (MB ML 320 CDI / W164) due to a severe engine oil consumption! The PCV was changed and the oil consumption went back again to normal!

One of the most neglected parts on this engine is the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve.

Can't hurt to change that part and see whats happening.

So worst case situation: in 8000 KM (5k miles) I use 800L fuel X 0,5% = 4 liter of oil use would be the maximal accepted amount.
3 quarts = almost 3 liter
But anyway I want it down to as close to 0 as I can get

1 quart (or liter) of oil use on a 5K mile oil change interval is the max acceptable IMO… My ML63 has used virtually nothing over the past 2500 miles FWIW, and that’s not exactly an economy-minded engine LOL!

That “rule of thumb” is total garbage. Whoever wrote that is smoking some bad stuff. 😂

Our 2010 ML350 Bluetec also has high oil consumption. And it started after the DPF regen frequency check engine light came on.
I believe it's due to the extra fuel used during the regen washing down the cylinder walls. So the rings don't seal as well, and you burn a bunch of oil. You don't see blue smoke because the DPF is capturing it.
Did yours go through the AEM or recall? If it did, the DPF is covered under warranty.
I would also look into having the DPF regen done manually, the Foxwell NT530 scanner I have will do it. If you're near Portland, Oregon I'm happy to help.
But I definitely recommend getting that DPF regen issue fixed before that consumption becomes normal.

Could be, but it don't seems to me that cause end effect is in this order. I'll bring it to my mechanic this afternoon and I'll post here what was the cause.
btw Thanks for the offer to help but I'm in The Netherlands
