Winter Tires 255/55R18

http://www.sizemytires.com/make/mercedes-benz/ml350

Selling my our 2007 Acura MDX Elite, and buying a ML 350 Diesel.

Have a brand new set of Michelin Ice-X tires with maybe 2000 miles on them, would like to keep them rather than buying new tires.

In 2006 Merc made a 255/55R18 tire, a five spoke that looks good. Was considering purchasing four of these wheels and using them for the winter tire change for a few months.

Does anyone know if these will bolt or how to find out the offsets on a merc ML?
Thanks

You are posting on the W166 forum (2012-), but most of us have experience with the W164. That tire size is perfect. You can use wheels off the newer model as well. More information on offsets and tire sizes in your manual.

The W164 18" should fit unless you have the AMG caliper covers. But a set of concentric wheel spacers (3~5mm) should cure that problem. They are available on eBay.

I actually run 255/65R17 Nokians on W164 rims with the spacers.

Keep us posted on which wheels you get & where from. I had a 2010 MDX & have a set of 255/55/18 Blizzaks that were only on for 5 months. The stock Dunlops on my '12 ML BlueTec sucked in the snow last winter. I'm still trying to find a set of 18" w164 wheels before this winter hits.

More research

Did a little more research on this topic. Thought by summarizing it could helping out the community in the future.

Researching if the W164 18" wheels fit on a W166 350ML Diesel.

Have a pair of 255/55R18 winter tires. Would like to buy 18" OEM W164 wheels for cheap. There are multiple W164 options out their although considering the part number 65370. OEM Part number: 1644010302 (not verified, although confident is a correct). Offset = 60mm. Bolt Pattern 5x112.

W164 technical specifications and references

Cross references R38 18" wheel option as the OEM part number above:

Found another thread that shows the sizes of the W164 R44 and R38 tiresize option codes:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
W166 technical specifications and references

The standard wheel on the 2012 ML 350 Diesel is a 255/50R19. Short sidewall therefore not the best for hard winter driving.

Mercedes Benz: Tire Fitting Chart:

Mercedes Manual W166: (tire options) - it lists 56 -> 59mm as possible winter tire options.

Fairly confident the Bolt Patterns are the same : 5-112

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Synopsis:
In the end this other post on mbworld said this could be done.

Found another thread on mbworld that said this was possible to install the 18" R38 and 17" R44 sized tires on the W166
https://mbworld.org/forums/new-m-cla...w-tires-2.html

-With a high probability they will clear the calipers and thoughts on why:

-Reviewing the 2012 Mercedes manual. The largest winter tire option is a "255/50 R19 8.5" wide with a offset of 59 mm". Comparing this with the W164 R38 aka the 18" option. The offset on the older W164 wheels is 60mm or 1mm greater than the 59mm or the 19" W166 option. Therefore adding 1 mm of danger of the rims being closer to the calipers. On the inside of the SUV the R38 is a 8" wide rim versus the winter package 8.5" rims; so inside clearance should be okay.

-Review again the 2012 Mercedes manual. The widest RIM offset is 62mm with a 8.5" wide tire. Therefore there is a good chance that the R38 should fit and should clear the calipers.

-Furthermore would like to confirm rim diameter. Common sense says that there is lots of clearance when you consider the tire height of some of the 22" rims people mount. Although could not find any reference to wheel/rim diameters precise specs online.

--------------------------------------------
Basically the R38 should fit height wise, inside rim width wise, and should clear the calipers.

The only part in the other mbworld thread that I did not understand was the thread length of bolts? Not sure why the regular W166 bolts would not work with W164 tires. Not sure how many threads, or the length of threads that need to be torqued down?

Anyones help on this one would be appreciated.

All ML's and almost all recent Mercedes have 5 bolt 112mm pcd patterns with about 66mm spigot diameter. The spigot means they are not interchangable with VW/Audi as some may suggest.

Late model ML's with alloy rims use a 45mm bolt whereas some earlier used 28mm bolts. Both have the same radiussed ball seat - not straight taper seats.

Both sizes are available on eBay.

Or if you get a rim which suits the short bolts, you can fit concentric spacers of about 5~8mm (also avialable on eBay). They will adapt to accept the longer bolts, correct some offset errors, and eliminate any clearance problems.

Sorry to resurrect this thread. Will the TPMS on non-mercedes rims work with the car. The dealer told me that it wouldn't work but other Tire shops tell me it will. I prefer the look and price of wheel/tire combo's from other manufacturer's.

Yes they will, as long as figment and TPMS are proper.

I just meant proper width, center bore & offset (fitment). As far as TPMS there are a few different systems. Just need to make sure you get the right ones (got mine at The Tire Rack.
