Question Anyone here look at the VW Touareg?

I'm getting ready to place an order for a ML350 bluetec but I am curious if anyone here considered the Touareg. What concerns me about the VW is that it does not offer some of the advanced features the ML does (ACC & blind spot warning) even on the top TDI executive trim at $63,000. IMO it should be priced in the lower 50s to compete with the Grand Cherokee which offers more equipment. Right now it overlaps the Cayenne at that price.

We seriously considered the new touareg tdi. Test drove a 2013 tdi executive model with all options and was not impressed. Liked the looks, seats, and overall feel, but where disappointed in the interior design, poor touchscreen display, and rough ride. I guess for the price we were expecting more. It's a great vehicle and tdi's have great following and reputation, but fully loaded they are expensive. If you can...Drive a touareg and then an ml, back to back for a good comparison.

Thanks for posting your experience with the touareg audimotion. It seems to not offer much value for the price they are asking.

If you are buying the ML based on the blind spot and lane assist feature... You will be sorely disappointed when the latest Hyundai shows up with it next year. I personally believe the technology was bought from some independent company and licensed to MB 3 years early and now everyone else will see it soon.... I am seeing it all over these days with 2014 vehicles.

Also.. The latest jeep Grand Cherokee is a ML in drag... (Same platform)

In reality, both the Jeep and Touareg (Touareg being a lot better) are both great vehicles.... And if you are buying a base ML it might make sense to seriously consider a upper version of the VW. If you were considering a ML550 or optioned out ML diesel... It might be a different story..... It really boils down to how much you want to spend and where the real value is.

Best of luck. Keep us posted

Well.... actually it's MB who "owns" the effective tech for blind spot assist.. and in turn they supply "licensed" systems....

Ahhh.... Well my point is that you will be seeing it on a lot of new vehicles in all price ranges.....

I turn my lane assist off as I find it annoying and startling for passengers to be pushed back into the center of a road.... Especially on narrow roads where I am avoiding pot holes or idiots crossing over towards me!

The blind spot assist is nice... Especially for my wife... She calls it the cutoff buzzer (as it beeps every time in cut back into traffic just a little too close.)

Thanks for the replies. I just wanted to see if I was missing something with the vw.

These are the options i'm interested in getting for the ML:

  • Palladium Silver Metallic (792)
  • Anthracite Poplar Wood Trim (729)
  • Special Order Option Charge (SPC)
  • Mb-Tex Wrapped Dashboard (U09)
  • Brushed Aluminum Running Boards (846)
  • Harman/Kardon Sound System (810)
  • Keyless-Go (889)
  • Multi-Color Interior Ambient Lighting (876)
  • Parking Assist Package (996)
  • Parktronic With Active Parking Assist (235)
  • Premium 1 Package (P01)
  • Lighting Package (319)
  • Driver Assistance Package (997)
  • Interior Sports Package (318)
  • Black, Premium Leather Seat Trim (801)

The ML comes out to being $3-4k more than the Touareg but it has the driver assistance package, a better brand reputation, and more cargo room.

Sounds like a nicely optioned ML.

I would highly recommend the distronic cruise control system and active braking. I run the cruise control from stop and go traffic to 80mph on the expressway and it is really great... One of those features that you never knew that you needed until you get it....

The active braking has saved my butt twice... Once with a deer and the other when somebody stopped a bit short and I wasn't paying as much attention as I should have been.

These two options might be included in your order but I would check.

Best of luck
