one or two strut replacement?

I recently had to take my ml350 (2012 w166) in for warranty service. The front end developed a subtle clunking noise at 20,000 miles. Inspection by Mercedes revealed a faulty drive side Strut which they replaced. The noise is gone - but I thought front suspension parts like struts should always be replaced in pairs? Should they not have replaced both struts - not just one?

As with brakes and tires, parts with a left and right should always be replaced together. After 20,000 miles, I would expect one strut to behave differently than the other.

Was it done on warranty? If so, they are not obligated to change both but only the non-working one.

Yes it was done under warranty. But it seems that a proper replacement is to change in pairs. The two struts now have very different wear pattern. If one tire went bad after 10,000 miles, they would only replace the one tire?

I am afraid if it is being replaced under warranty . . . . . yes, only one tire would be replaced.

A few months ago I took our 2012 ml350 BT in for a similar clunk noise. The dealer replaced both front struts...even though the passenger side was the only one leaking.

I guess it depends on dealer. ..when is on your dime they will do everything in their power to get you to Change both. ..when is on them then it's time to save money. ...they are hoping the other goes out after warranty

The dealer makes money if they replace one or two either way. They technically want to do as much work as possible regardless if it's on your dime or MB's dime. They make a little more money from you (like $20/hour more vs what MB pays) but still receive a flat rate from MB for all warranty work performed.

If I recall correctly, every warranty claim above a certain amount has to be submitted in something similar to a ticket system with picture/documentation of the issue. MB has a department dedicated to these claims who then approves or declines the work (usually if there isn't enough evidence, they'll decline it). If the dealer gets a certain number of declines, they get reprimanded pretty badly. Loss of goal bonuses, stricter approval policies, lower paid rate on warranty work, etc.

I stand corrected. I have learned something new.

I was under the same impression as you until my girlfriend's dad who is an exec at Ford (focused on the service) told me about how all manufactures handle warranty claims.
