Oil Recommendations please ML550
I don't want to pay the mafia rate at the dealership like I did last time so I purchase the 7201 MITYVAC and preparing to change my oil and filter this weekend. I've searched the forums and the internet and I cannot seem to find anyone recommending a brand or viscosity of oil. (O.K. I have not looked at the owners manuel yet - LOL). I'd rather just pop into an auto store and get oil there. Or is the Mercedes oil price competitive? What do you all recommend? Thanks!

Mercedes oil price at my dealership is a little bit more than twice the price you can get in any auto store. And I also noticed they tend to sell me an extra liter of oil for each oil change. They just throw one 1L can in the back of the truck (for refill) without even asking if I already have some or not. In 2 occasions I told them to remove it from both the trunk and the bill.

I purchased the Mityvac 7201 oil extractor and changed the oil yesterday. I have to say it was the easiest oil change I have ever done. I swear it got out almost every last drop of oil. The Mityvac was filled to the top. I could of had a 3-piece suit on and changed the oil - it was that easy. I highly recommend the Mityvac. I picked it up at NAPA for $100.

I have the Mityvac also and have changed the oil on my ML a couple of times now with no problems. Got mine on Amazon for around $88 inc shipping. A few people on here tried one and could not get all the oil to suck out. I have not had that problem. Makes changing oil so easy.

Just changed my oil again this past weekend, in a white undershirt, w/ the mityvac. Have done changes both via the drain plug and suction. I prefer the suction method if not replacing the crush washer on the drain plug which the new filter does not come with. Check your dealer's parts dept on prices. Mobil 1 ESP for the diesels used to be just over $10/qt here. Now, the MB packaged bottles (reported to also be M1) is down to $8.30/qt and they offer 10% off on Saturdays. Getting the filter and oil from the dealer is you quickest and easiest option. If you want to explore other oils, see the MB spec sheet (229.5?) http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevoli...hbegriff=229.5) for which ones carry the MB approval and see which are at your local parts stores.

If you have the diesel you want the .51 or .52 depending on car.
If you have a gas you want the 229.5 They are not compatible with each other.
The easiest 229.5 for your 550 to find would be the mobil one European formula 0w-40 as others have mentioned is easy to get at Wal-Mart (usually cheapest) or almost any parts store.

As far as I know Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 has been discontinued.

Bulk Oil
No, dealers do not buy oil in bottles( too expensive ) They buy oil in bulk from their local Mobil1 lube supplier.

Yea I figured they did, although you can buy bottles of oil from the dealership, I assumed they probably buy it in bulk to use for servicing
