Oil change went wrong?

I just finished changing oil on my 2014 ML 350 Bluetec. Started it up, seem to idle just fine. Went and slowly brought engine speed up to 1500 RPM and then something broke, no idea what, and oil shot out like a steady stream from the top of the engine somewhere. I immediately turned off the engine.

Does anyone have any ideas what broke? I am planning on getting it towed in tomorrow to a local European Car service place.

I do have a 3rd party extended warranty. Hopefully will not cost too much.

I think I may have figured it out. I originally had the large o-ring in the very very top groove instead of the largest groove of the oil filter cap. Can someone please help by confirming that is where it is suppose to sit?

Correct.

Misplacement of that large o-ring on the oil filter cap can cause that leak.
Cleanup the entire surrounding area, put the o-ring in correct location, tighten the oil filter cap, you'll be good to go.

Thank you. All cleaned up and placed o-ring in correct location. Started it up last night and all is good. No leaks . Just waiting for Blauparts to send me 2L additional oil I ordered to make up for 1L that spewed out. Plan on keeping the 1L extra as a spare.

I buy Mobil1 0W-40 from Walmart (5qt jug for around $22 and some change currently in MA). Costco also has 1qt bottles (6 pack) for around $36. I usually stock up the oil whenever Mobil1 0W-40 is on sale.

Would love to use off the shelf oil, but the vehicle I have is the Bluetec, so needs diesel compatible oil....so 228.51, 229.51, etc.....

Quicker is to get two bottles from your local dealer, and not to pay for shipping.
I buy oil/parts for my ML from MBoemparts.com they send you promo codes for free shipping.
