for sure weigh your options. i dont regret doing the work, i regret not doing it sooner, but i do wish there was something i could do to decrease the smell.
i first paid and had the nox sensors done due to a CEL, it was done by an indy shop, not a mercedes dealer, and from what i recall it was about $2200 CAD. i wouldve kept the car stock but what made me finally decide to do the delete/tune was that not even 12 months later i got the adblue heater as a code. Again i wanted to repair/replace it and keep the car stock, but when the quote came back about $800 for the adblue heater, and i cant recall if that was just the part or the part and labour, thats when i finally decided i didnt want the headache and possibly more errors or problems down the road so i got the delete and tune done. wish i did it when i had the nox error, wouldve saved me $2200

I think the smell is possibly directly related to the tune. I have no performance tune, and until last week, never really noticed any smell. And the smell I did notice was so minimal as to not be an issue whatsoever. But I have no performance tune.

the tune may be the reason, but it may also be how the delete was done. i know you mentioned yours was done differently.
i wouldve gotten better mileage if i didnt get the tune, BUT i still have better mileage than i did before the tune/delete AND the car is A LOT more fun to drive now too >

I’m a relative newbie to Mercedes and my GL350 but I have 2 other turbo diesel vehicles. I was planning to do a tune from the beginning and have read through this thread an others, I decided on OE Tuning and after dialogue with OE Tuning and following this thread, I decided against the DPF delete and the DEF delete—at least for now. I thought I would pass on my understanding.

First, if you tune the DPF delete, the DPF must be removed or the DPF will clog and cause a significant problem. The photos provided by KKarb show the DPF. However, my belief is the GL350 DPF is a combined DPF and DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) and if you gut the DPF you also remove one of the stages of catalytic processing of the diesel exhaust. The Buzzken DPF delete pipe offers the option to restore the DOC if you go that route.

The DEF/AdBlue injector location is actually shown in one of KKarb’s photos—the photo with his shoe in the caption. This is downstream of the DPF although in the same section of piping as the DPF/DOC. The SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalytic converter is not pictured but is further downstream and is the next section of the exhaust system. If you delete the DEF, this converter probably performs no reduction function at all.

Go to the diesel section of this forum and ask there, I believe Micah, amongst others, will be able to inform you as to what to expect. Myself, after having had the EGR and DEF equipment replaced at 20k miles under warranty (which ended this month), I can't wait to rip that **** out and start to actually benefit from the legendary Mercedes reliability that went the way of the dodo bird when they started dicking with anti-pollution stuff for diesels.
Hello can you tell me who in montreal does this work?
I am trying to get this done on my 2010 R350
Thanks

Other than increased engine noise on start-up in sub-freezing temps (for about a minute), there is no down side to these mods. I'm very satisfied with the results.

The fact that Numnuts disagrees is simply the icing on the cake.
Hi Peter. I didn’t see who you got your work done through. I live in Alaska, emissions aren’t a problem but I’d keep anything they took off. I’d like to find something that can be shipped to me as obviously it might be hard to get it done where you are I never had any issues with mine until I got the emissions “repair” done. Now 20k (miles) later it’s in the shop for a plugged DPF.
