New Brakes for ML350 Bluetech - 2015

Hello everyone,

New to this forum, this is my first Mercedes.

I have a 2015 ML350 with the AMG package. The front brakes are cross drilled. They need to be replaced and I was wanting to buy something from FCP Euro with the replacement warranty. Issue is that the ML350d wasn't sold in the US market?

What's my best bet for brakes?

I don't care for cross drilled.

Thanks in advance!

Given the relatively small size of the rotors for the weight of the vehicle and their tendency to get hot which has been known to warp rotors, I would go with OEM replacements for this application. Doesn't mater where you get them from - but the steel in cheaper aftermarket rotors is not going to be the same as the OEM spec and the risk of them warping is going to be much higher. Besides, the OEMs are not expensive.

Yes, I am seeking OEM replacements... just want to confirm the part number for the right brakes/pads. There are a number of options.
I have 2015 ML350 4matic Diesel, with AMG package.

I dont have the AMG pkg but i used powerstop drilled and slotted with their pads 3 yrs ago. I love them, cheap, wear nicely and i am still on the same set. I live in NY where they salt the roads pure white, no corrosion issues. My OEMs only lasted 2yrs before the outer edge rusted so bad it messed up the pad wear.

Just curious, are they worn, or are they exhibiting noises/vibes? I ask because our cross-drilled front rotors would make this strange, squeaky/vibey noise when coming to a stop. Something I'd never experienced before.
Turned out to be nothing more than the cross-drilled holes being plugged up, believe it or not...

im also going to be looking for rotors/brakes soon for 2014 ml350 with amg package. was curious about the powerstop stuff as it looks well priced but i hadnt heard much about it. any idea if they are at least oem quality or better? the sport version with the cross drilled were much cheaper than any other brand cross drilled i found and i was thinking theres no way the quality is up to par, or else why the price difference.

ive got the cross drilled on mine still, not sure if they are the stock ones or not but some of the holes do look plugged up, but i don't experience any shaking, vibrating, or noise at all so far. Peter was it near the end of life for them that you had that issue or did it almost always exist even well before it was time to change the brakes?

I would only get the coated rotors, I live in NY. So far better than oem for corrosion and I see no difference in wear

ROTFLMAO. No, I don't believe it. The only plugged up hole that makes vibey noises is the one between your butt cheeks. The idiocy continues.

these were the ones i was looking at, only mention of any coating is the zinc plating to prevent corrosion...

https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=9775708&cc=3305923&jsn=480 ?

same ones on the powerstop site...
https://www.powerstop.com/product/power-stop-z23-kit/#y=2014&mk=MERCEDES-BENZ&mo=ML350&ss=AMG%20Sport%20Pkg

are those the ones you are talking about with the coating?

The zinc plating will wear off the moment the brake pads sweep the rotor a couple of times, and the rotor surface will rust at the same rate as an uncoated one. The only thing that the zinc plating may possibly do is keep the rotors looking a little prettier along the outer edge and near the hat, which you'll be able to see only when you take the wheel off.

The rotors/pads had around 25k kms on 'em and otherwise looked good. Could've gotten another 10-15k km out of them easily

Yes. The coating is instrumental to keeping the rotor from rusting. Obviously the contact area will wear the coating off

bummer you had to prematurely change them out. was there no way to "clean" the plugged up holes? kind of like resurfacing rotors?

is it just me or does the replace/check brake pad sensor go off prematurely on these cars? My sensor went off i want to say about 1.5 to 2 months ago. At first I panicked a bit and started rushing to research costs at shops and then costs to do it myself. I've been keeping an eye on the pads and it still looks like there is plenty left. im inclined to order the parts i want now, but wait till the summer to do the change as i "think" the pads should still last that long.

I looked at my original Mercedes work orders from when I picked up the car, and it said the front pads were around 7mm then, that was a year ago. when i checked them about a month ago i ballparked there was around 4-5mm left on them (did my best to get in there with a tape measure). On top of that im not even sure if the mercedes work order copies they gave me are up to date, the only date i saw on them was a "promised date" and that said aug 2017 (i picked car up feb 2018). the work looked to match since it indicated star certified pre owned inspection, so maybe they just inputted/didnt update the "promised date" on the work order. Also showed they found turbo oil leak and replaced the seal ring, and washed the oil off. Although when i look that area is still pretty gunked up with oil, no liquid/oil around though so they probably just didnt do a great job of cleaning/washing it off. Another summer project! :/

either way glad to hear you are happy with the powerstop stuff, i will probably order those since they were the best price for a complete front kit.

I notice you have alot of time after the light goes off (assuming they wear evenly. If your changing the rotors you have even longer. Yes i am happy with the powerstop kit from rock auto. Its decent priced but a little confusing as to what parts fit my car. I had to check the numbers on the powerstop website. I am not sure if you have the AMG pkg on whats available.

i do have the amg/sport package. front rotors are 350mm cross drilled. so it should be identical to yours, the link i provided earlier to rock auto was the kit i was going to get.
any issues or things missing for installing that kit?

Very straight forward. Need to put the car into brake pad replacement mode by hold down call button and a certain sequence. This brings up the menu to ratchet the servo motors back in to replace the rear pads. If you force them using a C clamp you will break them. The software needs to activate the motors to pull the piston back in...only on the rear

Problem Solved, had a chat with a guy at FCP euro.... below are the parts for anyone for future reference.
I opted for ceramic pads for less brake dust... less bite on the brakes when cold, but thats the trade off I guess.....

Brake Pads: Akebono 0074208120
Mercedes Brake Disc - Zimmermann 1664211012

i noticed on a MB service order that when the dealer replaced pads and rotors, they also replaced the set screws for the rotors, is this something that should be done when changing the rotors?

You should. They easily get seized and then you have to drill them out when old.

Easier to to replace them when you can. They’re cheap too.

I came to recommend this same setup. I recently used this exact combo in my E320 Wagon and continue to fear my face will separate from my skull at times. Yes, they will feel a little hard when cold, or during initial bite when wet, but the absence of float and excellent modulation make up for these minor annoyances.

A few tips, which I received from the engineers that design these products: these pads do not require burn-in/bedding, as they are baked to a temperature that removes any offending (potential) gases, and they recommend removing the coating from the pad contact surface, which can easily be done with alcohol or acetone. (These pads rely on material transfer, rather than abrasive friction, to brake, and the coating likely interferes somewhat with that exchange.)
