What Mercedes Recommends If You Replace A Tire On A 4Matic

Well, I found a tiny, tiny nail in the sidewall which caused an incredibly slow leak but after leaving the car for two weeks, it was flat. Knowing sidewall repair means tire replacement, off to the tire shop. On 4Matics Mercedes says that if the tread depth of the new tire is 50% deeper or more than the remaining tire, replace both tires because of down the road steering problems. New tires are 14 and mine was 7 so I replaced both. Just a heads up. Also I found this when arguing with the tire shop about how many lbs each tire should get.

I never looked, but shouldn't those labels be consistent?

The one on the driver's door jam is maximum pressure, the one on the gas filler cap is normal pressure. MB does not make this clear in any manual that I have had with my MB cars. Every tire place will look at the driver's door jamb and fill your tires to that pressure unless you tell them to use the guide on the gas filler door.

M-B is wishy washy on tire pressures, and additionally specifies unnecessarily low pressure. Low tire pressure gives better handling (grip) and ride comfort, but worse for tire wear, particularly with M-B's excessive toe and camber settings in the rear, particularly on the GL. I air up so that operating temp results in 50 psi for all four tires. This is around 45-47 psi cold. Better fuel economy and tire wear. No noticeable degradation in ride comfort.

There is always a way to shave the new tire to match the other side

I heard you have to replace all four tires at the same time on a 4Matic, otherwise it puts a lot of strain on the differential system. What happens if you replace just the two in the front and leave the back alone? Especially if they still have half of their life left?

It is recommended to replace all at once but people get away with just replacing one, it is not immediate known what effect or damage it has on 4MATIC, might take a couple of years.

I replaced the front two tires but I left the back ones alone (2,700 miles ago). I'm wondering if that's different from replacing just one tire, which I can see how that might impact the 4Matic system. It's hard to imagine how the tread difference between the front and the back can damage the differential system, especially since there are regular differences in air pressure from tire to tire, but what do I know. Has anyone heard of Mercedes (with 4Matic) having issues with this caused by tire issues?

If it's your money the service department is spending, they will tell you to replace at least pairs of tires. If it's their money, they will only replace one tire. At least that's my experience with Mercedes Benz and BMW. I bought my current BMW with 40k kms and my current MB with 75k kms and I have the complete service histories of both cars. My BMW had two tires replaced separately and my MB had eight tires replaced, all separately. (The reason so many tires were replaced is because of the wording of the tire warranty.) Unless the tires are quite worn, I would only replace one and I would put the new tire on the rear, for an RWD or AWD vehicle, because the rear tires wear faster. (Of course, that only works if the front and rear tires are the same size, which they are on my MB but not on my BMW.) YMMV.
