W166 Oil leak 2013

Hey all - 1st post on here!

I drive a 2013 W166 350 bluetech with 51k Mileage.

I’ve noticed an oil leak that has been on going for over a month now but the amount of oil on my drive is not consistent.
I’ve done a lot of reading about the oil cooler seals going on these, but the pictures (attached) will show the oil coming from the top of the engine which appears to be the link to the the air filter section.

Dealers have quoted me £1400 for an oil cooler replacement inc labour, but just wanted to confirm it definitely is that without paying Merc £100 for a diagnostics.

Let me know! Thanks.

Zoomed out pic of engine.

Area from which oil appears to be leaking.

Silver pipe underneath the oil leak connects to turbo. There is a gasket between the pipe and turbo. Possible leak there.

Attaching pictures from my 2014, as I have a leak there as well. You will see my torn gasket.

The end that has the gasket and connects to Turbo.

Turbo where pipe connects.

Broken gasket.

Had my oil leaks fixed two weeks ago. 58,000 miles on my 2013 bluetec. They replaced the oil cooler and turbo seals as it was leaking both places. Fortunately it was all covered by extended warranty. Told me at the dealership it would have been close to a $3000 repair. Will be using an independent shop when the warranty ends.

Thanks!
what exactly is the last picture? My only question is, although this sits directly under the black air intake pipe, the oil is dripping from that pipe itself (as it appears I think).
so could it be something else?
if oil is towards the gasket as you say, what do you think I’m looking at for repair costs?

or would you recommend that I get diagnostics done to it?

@Tinda that last piece is the gasket that joins the silver pipe to the turbocharger. The picture shows my broken gasket, it's leaking "oily" air out of the joint. The gasket itself is like $8.00 approx., If you have the right tools, the repair is about 30mins-1 hour. I would take it to an independent instead of a dealer if you want a good diagnostic.

@Tinda I just finished replacing that gasket and the turbo inlet gasket (large orange). The small gasket in my last picture is what fixed my oil leak. It's about 1hr job. You'll need a triple square for the silver pipe, e socket for the intercooler muffler.

All three seals (two orange and one green) are recommended to be replaced at every oil change and I'm doing so by my self.

Update

Took the car to dealers today to get a diagnostics done to determine where the oil leak was coming from.

They said it wasn’t actually the oil cooler but 2 seals needed replacing. A leak was coming from the turbo air intake so that seal got replaced for £2.40 and then the turbo to maf sensor seal also got replaced for £3.90.

All in all it cost me £237.

Hopefully the leak is all sorted!

Man, those seals are so easy to replace... oh well.. Hopefully your leak is fix for now. I hate seeing dealership charging outrage labor rates...

Gosh I would have done that for you for a pint of ale! I did those seals a couple of months ago myself.

I know. With little hand tools, it can be done in like 30 mins to an hour max. I think i gonna replace mine next oil change. It like if you can change your own fuel filter, you can change these seals no issues.

So the car is still leaking oil!

I paid for a diagnostics and then they said it’s the 2 seals leaking, which got replaced.

Now the work they carried out was determined by the dealer, can I not say I’ve paid for a diagnostics and you’ve told me this is what’s wrong but now the car is still leaking oil, can I get a refund or is there another route to go down?

Any recommendations would be good thanks.

@Tinda Was the work on the 2 seals done by the dealer? Is there warranty on that work? I would complain to the dealer if it was their work and it's still leaking.....

Hey, yes it was done by the dealer.

I assume there must be some sort of warranty on it? What if they say the seals were also leaking and they’ve fixed that but I still have to pay for whatever the other issue is..

Whether they have a warranty or not on those 2 seals is between you and the dealer, but any decent dealer should replace those free of charge if truly indeed it's those 2 seals. But likely if some other seal is leaking, then yah you will need to pay for the other seals....But moving forward, you should get some tools and look after these seals yourself, they are not that hard. And on the advise of one of the others here, I am doing those seals now either on every oil change or every other oil change myself. Not taking any chances with oil leaking onto the intake flap motor, etc...The cost of the seals are like $2-$6, and about 30 mins wrenching time! And really does not warrant a trip to the dealer.

Turbo outlet pipe O rings costs

I'm about to do my O rings and sensor 3 on bank 1 but I'm still trying to find a leak at the front of the motor, is there a common failure in that area?
PS. I'm envious of your O ring prices, I've just bought the green one, $9 Aud. about £5GBP or $7US
But the black one was $52, £25GBP or $35US. Thankfully a member on here is sending me a black o ring for $19.

Mercedes ML350 Bluetec 2012
I can relate to your oil leak issues, last January I purchased a 2012 ML350 with 86K miles. It is the nicest car I have had in a long time. Shortly after getting the car I decided to have a health check completed to see if I had any issues that may be needed to be attended to. They said I had a major oil leak that wasn't visible from the top of the engine. Being January, I guess I should have done a better job before purchase. But anyway I have fixed my oil leak and replaced what I would say is a defective crank case vent valve which was allowing excess oil into the engine intake air stream. The amount of accumulated soot was amazing, please see the link below to my series of post for the complete repair. My local Mercedes dealer quoted $3600 just to replace the leaky oil cooler seals which were the oil red seals. Not sure what their full bill would have been considering the parts that I replaced. Please note that my car is covered under an extend warranty, due Mercedes legal settlement with US government.

Good luck with your vehicles!
