Oil leak from transmisson 722..

Hello, i am a owner of a ML350BT from 2013. I notice a very small oil leak from rear right side of the transmission. It drip dovn to the aluminium travers, and its some droaps near the engine mount in rear middle of the transmission. Any idea where this come from?? Is there any known leak points on this transmissions?

regards

Are you sure it is transmission oil, and not engine oil? The BT engines are well known to have several oil leaks, one of them is an oil cooler that leaks on the back of the engine near the transmission.

Hello, thanks for reply👍 i just replaced the oil cooler seals, turbo inlet seal and breater seal 60 days ago. Oil Leaking from this 3 things showed up in rear of engine. The plastic cover under engine was wet of oil at rear middle. This leak im talking about now is longer back on the car. Drip down 60-70 cm longer back than the first leak. It drips in the area were the transfer case is located, behind the transmission. I may be engine oil, but i think its a little bit to much rear on the car to be engine oil.

OK, can you post a photo of the leak? If you smell the oil, does that give any clues? Transmission and axle (transfer case) fluid has a strong and distinctive smell. Engine oil has a distinctive smell of its own, and sometimes smells of gasoline or exhaust.

If the oil is from the driveline, you need to narrow it down to the:

- front axle
- transfer case
- transmission

Because the oil is clear color, it looks like driveline oil to me. Did you smell the oil? It seems like a large leak. What happened to the vehicle?

No smell as i can smell😅 Its not a big leak, no dripping on garage floor. But its a bit oil in this area, mostly right side of the transfer case. If the leak is from the transfer case, it most be at the top of it.. Because it seems the oil comes from the top,. Is there any vent / breather at the transfer care, or from the transmission case? nothing happened to the car, no errors. I just noticed oil in ths area. Right side of transfer case. The left side of the transfer case is were the drve shaft goes rear and front. At this side the transfer case is completely dry, no leak. Only at the other side.

No, i dont think its simular to the other thread. My leak is at right side of transfer case, and 10 cm longer against front of the car, than that one in the other thread. My area around the driveshafts is completely dry, both rear going shaft, and front going shaft. I took some new pictures today. My meaning is that the oil seem to come from the rear of the automatic transmission oil pan.

The photos are hard to interpret.

To me it looks like the oil is coming from the front propshaft seal.

If the fluid is clear, and does not have a strong smell, it is transfer case oil. Do you agree? What is your next step to confirm the diagnosis?

Addressing a leaking transfer case can be done by replacing the case with a rebuilt one, or resealing the unit you have. In both options, the transfer case needs to be removed.

I will update the thread when i got the answare😜 Anyway, here is a picture of the outgoing front propeller shaft from transfer case, no sign off leak her.

OK, it's more clear after the last photo. Possible leak points are the dividing line between the transfer case castings, or the input shaft seal. Can you post a photo from the front of the transfer case showing the leak?

Its hard to get a good photo from front, because the aluminium travers is covering it. But the input shaft seal, is a good sucpect👍 But erlier this year i serviced my automatic transmission. New oil, new filter, flushing and cleaning. Thats why i had misstake to the transmission.

Ok, you should have mentioned the transmission service in your first post.

The leak can be coming from the transmission oil pan or the input shaft seal on the transfer case.
