2012 ML350 Bluetec Soft brake pedal

We have a 2012 ML350 Bluetec and when you step on the brake it seems soft. After you stop, the pedal seems to slowly continue down, but very slowly. Has anyone experienced bad master cylinders? It has 95,000 miles. We got a low brake fluid warning, but since topping up there have been no other warnings.

Likely air in the system. What is the history of your ownership of this vehicle? What service has been performed on it in the past 18 months?

I wonder how low is low when the low brake fluid warning popped ON! Was it so low that it allowed air into the system and that is what you are now feeling air in the system and therefore you need to have the brake system bled.

We have had it for a number of years and had the fluid replaced at the dealer at the recommended service intervals. It is probably due for new brake pads.

Surprisingly, not very low. I would say just below the "low" level on the reservoir. The warning has not re-appeared since filling. The vehicle does seem about due for new brake pads.

IMHO that is too low. Anything below "low" level on the reservoir is considered too low and you run the risk of air getting sucked in. I maintain the brakes on my vehicle myself and would refill if it gets close to the low level, certainly would not wait at all.

If it were mine I would replace the pads, rotors and sensors, top up the fluid and go from there. If the pedal remains soft, either flush the fluid if you are capable or take it to the dealer or Indy to have it done.

I had the same problem after replacing the front calipers on my FJ. Turns out the brake line had an ever so small leak. Whenever stopped at a light, the pedal very slowly started to drop and the truck would start to roll forward.
