SOS inactivated

I have a 2014 ML350 and the other day the command/radio did a channel update. The next time I started the car I got the SOS inactivated in the message center. I tried some of the suggestions such as turn the car off, let it sit for two minutes with the headlights on , shutting the lights off then turning the ignition off but it didn't work. I thought since I put in HIDs several years ago I was not getting the voltage pull needed so the next time i did that, I also put on the high beams with the same results, nothing. I also noticed when I lock the car, the SOS and brake lights stay lit on the dash unless I don't put on the brake or cancel out the SOS message. I have 105,000 highway miles and it runs like a champ so as you can imagine, I hate to have this issue bugging me and I am trying to stay away from the dealer. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

One option is to have the dealer deactivate SOS, if you don't use it: https://mbworld.org/forums/w212-amg/...operative.html

Here is another thread: https://mbworld.org/forums/gl-class-...operative.html

Understood on staying away from the dealer. Another option is an indy shop.

I took it to a local independent who tried to resolve the issue. Couldn't do it but said he spoke with someone and that his computer needed to get an update which he plans on having done by next week. As best I can understand, once he does a "reset" everything should be ok. I think it will stay connected. Guy was really nice about it and I was not charged anything for all the diagnostic time spent on the vehicle. If anyone in central NJ is looking for a good independent, send me a note and I will get you the information

@pcsgrp Please keep us posted, if/when you come to a successful resolution. You need to make one more visit back to the indy shop, correct?

I hope it is only one more trip to get it resolved. Fortunately, I live about 1/2 mile from the shop and I usually get my non-ethanol gas there so if I need to do it a few times, not all that big a deal. If he is ready to do it towards the end of the week, I will drop it off. Need to stick around house to take care of the other half since she is having knee surgery next week and is going to need a lot of TLC. I will keep everyone updated on the sos issue.

Well, the independent was unable to fix or disconnect the SOS inoperative light so it is now in the shop at the dealer. Got a call from them yesterday saying that they were waiting for MBUSA to give them direction if they could just shut off that system, I guess some legal issue. I reminded them that I never used it so the "on-star" properties were useless and I guess the tracking system can not be activated in case the vehicle was stolen if the system was deactivated. I mentioned that I had read that some dealers made people sign a paper stating that they wanted it disconnected so the dealer or MBUSA would not be liable if the system was functioning and something happened and it was turned off. As best I can tell, the only thing really impacting me would be the tracking system.
If someone wants a 2014 ML, good luck. That is what I have insurance for! Hopefully, the dealer will get the ok and program out the system and I can get it back for a reasonable programming price.

@pcsgrp Thanks for the update. Just a guess, but if a vehicle such as a 2014 ML were stolen, the parts would be more valuable than the vehicle. Engine, transmission, suspension parts, interior (seats), exterior body parts, etc.

Just got back from the dealer. They wanted me to leave the it over the weekend but that isn't going to work. Have a new service appointment in a few weeks with a loaner so if they need it I am not stuck without transportation. They were saying that the reason the light is going off is because there is a fault in the SRS system. They think it could be a switch, sensor under the seat or perhaps seat belt and they need a little time to check it out and right now they were jammed (the service advisor did me a favor and squeezed me in the other day so I am ok with having to come back to get it done) with backup work. I don't know why they are so busy but I do know someone who works at the dealership and they are selling cars like crazy, they don't have any inventory (I wanted to look at a GLE 350 or 450 to see the changes and they didn't have any at all) and it looked like the service area was very busy.

Even though they spend time on doing the initial evaluation and had the car overnight, no charge for the initial diagnosis. Very surprised at that. They didn't think it was a major issue to fix specially if it is only a computer reload/update.

Well, it turns out that they can't disconnect the light or the system itself. They say it has something to do with the SRS system so they have to change out the module. Ouch! The way I look at it, my ML has basically been worry and problem free (except for little maintenance things) so putting some money into it is not all that big an issue. The one good thing was that I was given a glb loaner with the 4 banger and while it was smaller than my ML and very quick, I was not thrilled by the amount of road, engine and other vehicle noises. My ML is so quiet even at highway speeds you hardly know your moving. Don't know what the CLE would be like but I am sure with the 4 banger I would still get engine noises like the GLB. I was also not impressed by the build quality. I didn't think it was as good as my ML just as the ML doesn't seem to be as good as the E350 which is made in Germany. The independent I found is chomping at the bit to buy my ML so if that is any indication how good it is, great. I think I am just going to keep it. After all, almost every time I drive it someplace I say to myself "boy, Mercedes makes a really great vehicle"

Glad to hear you are getting the SOS light addressed.

Agree with your assessment of the GLB. It is a cheapened vehicle. Cheapened is a word used intentionally. The GLB does not carry the same presence, admittedly in a smaller form factor, than the larger and older MB models.

A, CLA, GLA and GLB models are a cut below in terms of build quality, noise and vibration, materials and finishes.
