2014 ML350 Bluetec - CEL code P050E and slow to start

I had the emissions/exhaust recall work done last month. When I got my car back I noticed that it took a while for the engine to turn over before it started up. It formerly was immediate. Now it sounds like "turn turn turn turn turn turn - CRANK" when I start it. Now I have a check engine light on, and the code was P050E as read by the folks at my local auto parts store. That is "Cold Start Engine Exhaust Temperature Too Low" which I've read occurs in vehicles in very cold climates. Since I live in Savannah and it's summer now, I highly doubt my car is suffering from being too cold. I have an appointment for service. I mentioned the code to the service rep and he said "oh that's not a Mercedes specific code reader so that could mean anything." Has anyone had this code show up before with this make/model and if so, what was the eventual diagnosis (and ballpark cost to repair)? Would it/could it be related to the recall work and reprogramming?

Also, has anyone had the starting lag like I have after the recall work on your Bluetec? I initially thought it was the battery because at my B9 service they mentioned I should think about replacing it but it seemed odd that the change would occur overnight and only began immediately after having the recall work done.

Otherwise the car acts fine. No loss in power, had better gas mileage on a recent trip. Thanks for any input/insight you might have.

Sounds like a low performing glow plug. If so, possibly disconnected? Does the glow indicator light on your instrument cluster stay on for more than a second or two?

I haven't noticed the glow coil icon staying on any length of time, but I'll watch it the next time I start it up.

It is related to recall repair

Took it in yesterday and received a call late in the day saying the issue is related to the NOX sensors they replaced during the recall repair and that the shop manager was pulled in to work on the issue so, sounds like an unexpected issue with the work they did previously. I'm hoping that I'm not without my car for three days again but I told them to keep it as long as they needed to actually get everything fixed correctly this time. Unfortunately this is my only car and my particular dealer doesn't have courtesy cars available right now. I hope everyone else gets their repair done without issues, but if there are odd problems, get it back in to the shop asap.

Final follow up

Picked it up yesterday after 2.5 days of work on it. It is much better at starting now (immediate instead of sounding like it's turning over), and the responsiveness when driving and accelerating is much better. I'd noticed a little degradation in that after getting it back after the recall work but it was apparently more than I thought because it was quite noticeable once it was fixed. I didn't get the printout of the work done, as the service rep was swamped, it was near closing time, and she handed me the keys and said "you're good to go and I'll get the printout to you." I'll share the work order when I get a copy. I'm thinking it involved more programming work than mechanical since the rep shared that the shop manager "had to reset some settings." Happy to have my vehicle back and happy that it is acting like it should.

Jessamine, Did you ever get the paperwork describing the work performed by the dealer? I have the exact same issue that you describe. I noticed a slightly longer cranking time after the AEM. I now have the check engine light with P050E code with about 600 miles since AEM. I would like to prepared when I take my GL350 back to the dealer. Mike

I should've followed up on my follow up. I ended up taking it in a total of three times and they had to do some additional repairs and software updates I believe. I also had my battery replaced that last time, just to see if that would help plus I'd been told that the battery was needing to be replaced back in the spring so I went ahead with that repair.

Here's my timeline:
#1 - I had the recall work done which replaced all of the exhaust system parts involved in the recall - NOX sensors, cat. converter, etc. Got my car back and didn't drive it for a few days, then noticed the lag in start when I tried to crank it the first time after getting it home.

#2 - My check engine light came on about a week after the initial repair and the code was 185800. The exact text from my bill is: Found code for Exhaust Aftertreatment malfunction. Code 185800. Checked and found PTSS case for similar concern - Performed SCN coding on the CDI and SCR module. Checked that the correct NOX sensors were installed in the correct locations - OK. Reset adaptations for the exhaust after treatment system and had driven for 40 miles. Rechecked for faults - no faults returned." I think this is when they did some additional software updates.

#3 - Looking at my paperwork for the third trip I had faults 16cc00, 203d85, 203d22 at the last trip. They removed and replaced the AdBlue control unit (that alert had showed up on my console too) which is part 1 166-471-07-75 A01-1PV637 RS Preheater. There's a note under it that says "control unit damaged during repair, hose end snapped due to age and dry rotting" so that may or may not apply to your vehicle since it seems to be human error. They also removed and replaced the fuel delivery module (part # 1 002-470-68-94 A03-1PV158 RS Fuel).
After that everything seems to be normal.

If you need me to scan and send you my paperwork I can do that. I don't want anyone else to have to deal with endless trips to get this stuff fixed.

Jassamine, Thank you very much. I don't think I need you to scan your paperwork. In my case something interesting has occurred. The check engine light came on while out of town. I have Scangauge connected to monitor regens so I simply used Scangauge to read code P050E. I also tried to clear the code but got no response--the code would not clear. When car was started yesterday morning for 500 mile drive home, the check engine light was off and did not return. I haven't started the vehicle yet today. I'm going to hold off a little before contacting the dealer. Incidentally, I also have original batteries (almost 7 years) that continue to perform great--I think!!!

Cranking time more than usual

I have also began recently experiencing extended cranking time before it starts. However I’m already over the extended emissions warranty due to going over the mileage limit since my recall repair.

My glow plug light has began to light up just a tad bit longer than what I’ve previously remembered.
