Question ML350 Lift Gate Strut Replacement

I just replaced both lift gate struts with aftermarket units and the installation process was easier than I anticipated. After replacement, the lift gate closes via the remote (as designed) but will not lift on it's own by either the remote, tailgate button or the button on the driver's door.

I have read in related threads that the dealer needs to perform some "programming" task after they have been replaced for them to work as designed. Is that the case and is it as simple as that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

just replaced mine yesterday - remote and buttons works fine. Seems like I missing program opening hight option. As per aftermarket instruction I did close the gate manual to initialize after installation.
Try to disconnect and reconnect maybe?

I changed after market power strut early this year. Worked straight away, no programing. It lasted 3 months. Then I have to order the Mercedes original one. This time I changed both sides. There was part upgraded by Mercedes a while ago. It is probably a better design. Finger cross, I hope they will last longer than the after market one.

Search for “normalizing” the liftgate positions. It’s on this site.

Do the pins come with the struts? I had to destroy the one in it to get the strut out and my replacement has not arrived yet.

Liftgate normalizing video is available on YouTube and also likely linked on this site.

8/18 UPDATE: I replaced both struts and the liftgate properly closes with the button on the bottom of the liftgate, driver's door button, as well as the remote. However, it will not raise on it's own using any of the power options. I had a second set sent to me and I have the exact same problem. I saw someone mention that once they are replaced, I need to "reprogram' them to operate properly and that has to be the issue as I can't imagine I had two defective sets sent to me in a row. Is that the case and if so, what are the steps?

Also, for all of you stating how hard it is to access the wire harness connector, it is much easier to remove the carpeted side panel just like when I replaced the auxiliary battery. Don't get me wrong, it's a pain removing all. of the screws, clips, etc., but it is still easier than trying to work in that very small space.

I opened the side as well. Much easier, not much work at all, really. I have the same problem, will not lift. I did the "normalizing" still does not work.

Exactly! The normalizing process seems to be more applicable to adjusting the height of the liftgate, not re-syncing it after the struts have been replaced. I have calls into two dealerships as well as two local M-B mechanics to see what can be done. I will post what I find out as soon I can get this resolved.

I even went into the Engineering menu and did not find anything to help.
