2013 Mercedes Benz ML350 4Matic low coolant message comes up on dash, reservoir full?
2 Questions:
Has anyone replaced the low coolant sensor on the reservoir? If so, how difficult is it? price on the sensor?
Has anyone experienced loosing antifreeze into the engine? If so, what are the signs of this happening?
Appreciate your help, thx!
Anthony
The level sensor is very sensitive. I believe it looks almost full even when the error message pops up.
Parked on a flat surface and it's completely full.
About once a year I top it off with a very tiny amount if the message seems to be coming on more than usual. Then a few months later it starts again.
Just add a tiny bit to make sure it's completely full, and start to watch if it's happening only when parked facing downhill.

as others have mentioned, topping up the coolant is not uncommon, i also had to do it recently because of the warning (also only on cold mornings). once topped up i never saw the warning again.
my coolant tank did not look empty, it was maybe 3/4 full. What you consider full or almost to the top may not actually be full enough for the sensor.
Look inside the coolant tank, you should see a plastic bar in there, the coolant level should be to the top of the bar.

BUT the fluid is now black (but full) when you look inside the reservoir tank. ?????

Either is leaking out, burned because a blown head gasket, mixing with the engine oil because an oil cooler gasket, or with transmission if they shared the radiator.
Black color hints towards head gasket. Time to pressurize the cooling system and see if holds pressure. If it does not, find the leak
