Water coming out of Trunk lid

When I opened the trunk, water started streaming out of the plastic on the inside. It was after a big rain. The only thing I think it might be from is the lights on the trunk lid, one looks like it isnt on all the way. Does anyone know how to pry those off or take off the plastic surround on the inside of the trunk?

Taillamps are a good place to look.

First check the easier things: both perimeter seals, rear glass seal and rear wiper shaft seal.

2013ML350 always has this issue after rain or snow. Now my tailgate close button hardly works.

Any luck finding the source of your leak?

I had this issue on my 2016 VW GTI. The source of the leak was my tail light that wasn’t tightened down properly. The water had actually corroded one of the wires so I had to cut the corroded section off and splice in new wire so that the electrical signal could pass through. A pain to do because I had to remove all the trim and beep test each wire to see which wire was affected. Job is doable at home for the MB, just needs time to troubleshoot.

May not be the fix, but seems a good opportunity to at least suggest it...

Does the trunk lid have any drain holes that might be clogged? I have often been surprised by how many body parts on cars actually have holes/reliefs built into them for water to naturally flow out (bottom of doors, inside of sunroof rails, body at base of windshield). Be good to just check if this is potential option that's there. Obviously this is the sort of thing that gets no results on a google search.

I once had an entire roof's worth of freezing cold water dump down on my head and back as I braked to a stop the morning after a hard rain... That was when I learned that sunroofs have drain holes (that can clog), and when they get clogged the ENTIRE roof of your car turns into a jug collecting (gallons and gallons of cold) rain water. It was a real cold shower moment.

Hope that's helpful (now or later),
Joel

Had this same issue. It was the the gasket below that needed to be replaced. You could see water leaking into the car if you took a hose and sprayed just above these lamps on the tailgate. Off the top of my head I think it was around $50 for two new gaskets and it wasn't that hard to do.

W164 is well known for leaking taillamp gaskets.

@Pewter7 how are you making out?

Finally got it opened up and not sure what the issue is. There was some moisture on the gasket.
