2013 Mercedes Benz ML350 4Matic W166- Rear Coil Spring Removal and Installation..
Post number 181, I documented how I did it and tools I used.
1st Question:
Is it necessary to disconnect the control arms to remove the coil spring?
I ask because it seems as though if you correctly compress the spring using the kit you showed in your thread that the spring should close enough to remove from the car without disconnecting the suspension? Now I could be completely wrong, I just wanted to ask.
2nd Question:
Did you need an alignment after the new coil spring installation? I ask because with that many pieces of suspension disconnected did the alignment get out of alignment.
Thx again!

No need alignment, none of those arm affect alignment

I took on the project today. I followed your instructions and added a few pointers.
I didn't use the coil spring compression tool to remove the old coil or install the new coil.
I disconnected the lower shock mount bolt, lower sway bar link, both upper control arms, disconnected all wiring around the caliper, plastic wire mounted brackets that clicked into the control arms. I was able to lower the entire area enough to safely remove the old coil spring and factor in the new coil spring. NO COIL SPRING COMPRESSION TOOL NEEDED.
It took some muscle to bounce the lower control arm low enough to sneak in the new coil spring as there is the upper and lower plastic mounting pieces that need to screw onto the upper and lower part of the new spring coil.
Honestly, if you disconnect every single brake line bracket and abs wire brackets you shouldn't have to remove the caliper /brake pads. Prior to lowering your jack from under the shock mount be sure all wires are free because if you lower your jack too fast there is a possibility of damaging a brake line, abs sensor wire etc. etc.
Each side took me 1 hour as I'm super **** with checking my work and taking my time.
I just wanted to thank you for responding to my forum question as it was your response that gave the boost/confidence I needed to take on the project myself.
Appreciate you!
Dear Dvakata, can you share the contact or phone number of a local indie store, otherwise I have the same problem with springs
