With my 08 642, I never knew it was regenerating. Only way I could tell was if I had the trip computer on present mpg. It would drop to 24 and stay there until it was over. Hope your egr was the problem.

2012 ML350
When I bought the car used, I had similar issues with "creaking" sound specially when going thru bumps. While in the process of changing the front shocks, I was able to replicate the sound while moving the UCA out of the way. Saw the UCA bushings were worn out. I just swapped out both front UCAs and issue was solved. Didn't even bothered to put in new shocks as the old one was still fine. Hardest part to DIY was access to the UCA bolt and nut inside the wheel well close to the firewall.
