ML550 - Intercooler coolant reservoir

Too many german broads
ML550 - Intercooler coolant reservoir

Had a low coolant message. The big tank looked fine, checked the smaller tank, and it was completely empty. I topped off, then realized it all leaked straight to the ground.

After further investigation, it seems this tank is completely disconnected and I was able to basically remove it on the spot.

Shouldn't there be two hoses connected to this reservoir? Nothing seems to look disconnected so this is very confusing! Did something just fly off here?





2013 ML 550 with M278 engine.

Yes, there should be two hoses! I would find them, they have to be dangling somewhere in the front of the engine bay.

Where was that reservoir? I have the same car, and I dont have that smaller reservoir. There is an empty space next to the ECU like yours, but it has been vacant since new.

The intercooler system was improved for the m278/157 around 2013 to add a segregated coolant reservoir, the original cooling design has a shared coolant reservoir.

Appears I'm looking for #280 and #240. Still for the life of me cannot see where that metal #240 could have gone or where it even connects. I do have Active curve, not sure if this changes something in the bay. Found similar part on eBay, which I think is what I'm missing.

So the theory is it has been bypassed, as it appears this could have not just happened on its own. And that my coolant low leak could be something else, I’ll have to get a pressure test to confirm.

Just noticed this - I had a low coolant light in winter twice and took it in to get looked at…nothing observed. Only happened when cold. Coolant was topped off and on my way.

As far as bypassing - the only thing I could imagine was when they dropped the engine to replace the entire wiring loom around 50k miles? I’m genuinely curious about it though - confusing find. Basically been running for a decade like that…

Still miss that ML550 - the GLE w/ eABC is great, but the ML550 just felt like what I assume a Russian oligarch feels like when driving.
