2015 ML350- noisy door hinges

Bought 2018 with 15K
Currently at 89K

Front door hinges are getting mighty noisy and it's time to address them; drivers door is definitely bad, passenger side is starting. I found an inde shop recently who said they can take care of them - I could order them in advance and they would get them painted, and then install.

Couple questions:
1- How common is this issue? Can only find a FEW references online
2- Are both upper and lower hinges typically replaced at the same time?
3- If this starts at 70K miles, who is to say they won't need replacement again - anyone replace them more than once?

Thanks for any insight.

Have you tried getting some lubricant into them. My 500 had 250,000km on it and the 63 has 140,000 on it and both have never had issues with door hinges. I do squirt them with a bit of lube occasionally because I usually pressure clean in around the door hinges because we live on a dirt road.

I'll second what Matt is saying. Try lubing them first. My 2013 ML350 Bluetec is at 350 000km and the door hinges are dead silent. Never had an issue with them.

Thanks Matt and Potrice for your inputs. I just don't see how any spray would get inside, as there is not any openings or gaps.

Here are two videos of the driver's door hinge and it really sounds bad . . . The sound is definitely amplified since I am so close, but still very irritating to hear every time the door is opened or shut. I'm wondering if cleaning the door jambs regularly has actually washed out some lubricant in the hinges over time. Bottom line is that I need to get them replaced.

If lubricant can be washed out, lubricant can be sprayed in.

I would definitely give it a go before replacing them. I would go as far as drilling a small hole across the pivoting part of the hinge so you can get a spray tube in there. The ones they sell with a can of lube. I’ve never heard of anyone replacing hinges. I haven’t looked but is one side factory welded in position.

One more point: Any indie shop who would recommend hinge replacement at 90K miles over grabbing a can of lube and liberally spraying them down, working the door back and forth a few times, wiping up the excess and merrily sending you on your way... I would quickly run away from.

Actually, it was me who suggested the replacement to the inde shop, just never thought there was a way to really grease the hinges as I have done on other cars for decades. They seem pretty good, have gone to them the past year as I got tired of the crazy dealer prices. One thing they found on a visit was the camshaft sensors leaking - I just happened to be in the area when they called about them and I swung by - they took me into the shop to look under the hood myself, certainly something that wouldn't happen at a dealership. They couldn't believe the dealer had never checked them.

To your previous point about lubricant washing out, lube can be sprayed in - - certainly makes sense that over time it can wash out. For the past week I have been spraying a lithium grease on the hinges with the idea that some may seep in, but it's likely too thick. Since first posting I read on some forum about a lubricant "HHR Plus" that the poster found effective for hinges. The product claims "High creep capacity". Ordered it and should be here tomorrow:
Amazon Amazon

In the meantime I started spraying WD40 on the hinges a few times a day. Yes, not the right product, but thought it may 'seep' better and at least calm the squeak. Well, it SEEMS like it MAY be a little quieter. Eager to try the new product and will give an update.

looking at out hinges on Friday when washing my car our hinges are riveted into the pillars so replacing them would be a huge job.

Did the HHR Plus work for the car hinge noise as I have the same issue and the dealer said replace the hinges.

I have sprayed the hinges daily and there has not been any improvement. The product came highly recommended in another forum so will continue to use it on the rear door hinges and elsewhere. It wasn't cheap. Was amused that it has a 'shaker ball' inside like a spray paint can; doesn't seem like a typical lubricant. I'm guessing that my hinges were just too far gone, so need to get them replaced in the next few months. It doesn't seem like a big job. I do want to keep the old ones to dissect and see exactly what the issue is with them.

It still baffles me that there is no maintenance recommendation (that I could find) for lubricating and the dealer never suggested it over 5 years of servicing. With that, I always assumed it was a sealed assembly that didn't need attention.

Resolved: I went ahead and got new lower hinges. Took them to a body shop for painting, and when done, took the car in for them to be installed.

Hinges: from MB Parts Source, best deal I found, right and left bottom hinges and shipping - $187
Paint / Install: local shop, $453
Total: $640

Just picked up the car - - wow, absolutely silent.

The crunching lower hinges on the front doors are a super common. I bought my ML 350 pre-owned from a dealership 5 years ago, and I noticed it (was only a slight noise) on my driver's side (left) front door back then. I tried lubricating it, and it helped a little. The former Mercedes dealership tech who looked into a mysterious low pressure fuel pump issue I had the following year noticed it right away without my saying anything and said that it would have to be replaced to address it. I didn't bother replacing it, and it hasn't gotten any worse or caused any real issues with opening or shutting the door...so I'll probably just ignore it. The passenger side (right) front door is still quiet.

Also had this problem a little while back on our 2015 ML400 for the drivers door, ended up replacing the a/set of hinges I forgot.
