CL600 Noisy Power Steering
I bought my CL600 2007 with 46.5k on the clock, it was basically in some ones car collection who passed away and was part of his estate. It has not been used much.
When I got the car from a used dealer he said that their in house mechanic had inspected it and replaced a hose, I have a genuine pertex hose fitted which I assumed was the leaking one.
Once I got the car home I have changed all fluids with the correct fluid including the suspension fluid and filter. STAR was used for rodeo mode when changing suspension chf-11penstatin fluid. It was noted after the fluid change on STAR that running pressure of system had increased from 191bar to 197bar.
I also drained and replaced the power steering fluid, never did either system run dry and extreme cleanliness was observed at all times.
4000 miles later I have really noisy power steering, whining and sounds like air in the system and the steering is not as smooth as it should be both reservoirs are correct and no leaks.
The noise appears to come from the pump.
The questions:
1: Is this as it appears and needs a new pump?
2: Have they been known to go bad after 50k miles?
3: Is there anything else I need to check before changing the pump?
Many Thanks.

What happens to the sound if you turn the steering wheel from lock to lock, with engine running and the transmission in "P"?
Can you discern whether the sound is from the pump or from a pulley? The above test could help.
After inspecting the power steering system today I could only find some oil around reservoir bottle. Bottle dipstick lid and gasket cleaned.
Fluid topped up and bled by moving front wheels left to right with engine off while on axle stands,
engine started no noise and steering smooth.
Went out for a drive and it started to get noise, stops
to check and found fluid frothing out of lid on reservoir bottle.

You mentioned that you drained and refilled the power steering. And a mechanic prior to your ownership replaced a hose. Is it possible any of those repairs have resulted in a leak?
Did the vehicle demonstrate this problem the day you bought it? If no, dig into the repair work you and the mechanic did. If yes, the air/foam are likely due to lack of use and a seal somewhere may have hardened and become ineffective.
I have done 4K miles in the car in last 7 months since I bought it.
The car did not do this when I bought it or after I serviced it 4K miles ago.
Tomorrow I will put vacuum pump onto reservoir and see if it holds vacuum.
Also reading WIS it says upto 30 lock to lock with engine off to bleed system of air.
But of course the big question is where did all this get into the system?
Will report back with findings.
