Scratchy sound around oil ventilation valve

Hi all,

Been trying to figure out a noise that's coming from the left front camshaft area, specifically around the plastic oil separation valve that sits on the timing cover. You can find a video of the sound here:

I was talking to an S65 owner who had a similar-ish issue which was the centrifugal oil separator that sits just inside this timing cover, and I changed this as a precaution to no success (old one had some cracks in it so it was a good move regardless).

Does anyone have any idea what this sound could be?

It is definitely not belt related and can be heard with a stethoscope only at the timing cover where the black plastic valve mounts - basically I think the noise is coming from the camshaft but can't figure out what it is.

If any other M275 owners could have a listen to their engines in this same area I would be interested to know if it makes a similar sound. It only makes this sound when warming up. When the engine is hot it is very quiet.

Thanks all

Hi @pmercury

Thanks for chiming in. Unfortunately there aren't too many folks about the V12 board. I'll try to get a few more recordings.

New video with the belt removed. Here you can hear it clearly from around the 48 second mark to the end.

Going to try a slightly thinner when cold oil. Have ordered some 0W40 to replace the 5W40 that's currently in there. Seeing as the noise all but disappears when the engine is hot it may be oil flow connected.
