Squeeky steering

Does anyone has a problem with squeeky steering which i noticed is actually a transmitted noise from the front of the car. Happens at lower speed even with the mildest turn and only happens after the car warmed up.
I have a CLK 350.

Sounds like it could be the power steering pump. Check fluid level and if low check for leaks at the pump and hoses. Could also need to be bled (air in system) With the engine running, turn full left then full right several times. Then check fluid level, top off if necessary and repeat the proceedure again.

CLK500 Elegance
I have a CLK500. I don't have "squeaky" steering as such. I have an irregular pulse or pump feeling in the steering when I turn left at speed. That is not turning left from say a red light - stopped. Happens every so often. I thought it was something to do with the power steering pump. Anyway I was recently at my MB dealer getting a couple of rattles sorted. I asked them to try to check out the steering.

They have to replace the entire steering rack assembly. $8000 (Australian) plus labour. The whole assembly has to come in from Singapore [7 days]. Thank goodness - under warranty!

I am not sure if they found something major, or they couldn't be bothered finding/replacing the actual bit that is broken, damaged worn etc and feel it is easier and faster [six hours work they claim].

Whilst I am happy it was found, will be repaired under warranty etc [this is the first time I have been to this dealer - very happy with them] I am concerned such a mjaor expense item appeared in the CLK with only 15,700 KMS on the clock!

steering rack

The squeek in ur rack is caused by the radial seal at the control head...it is replaceable seperatly and is not a big deal. The parts kit is cheap and I think around 5-6 hr labor.

If you honestly think replacing the radial seal fixes the noise, then why must we replace the rack 9 out of 10 times after performing the reseal?

I second that. But you know for the warranty cars, we have to replace the seal first and then replace the rack if that doesn't fix it. Basically the seal doesnt fix it most of the time.

I have never replaced a complete rack for that noise...thats why there is a dtb..The new rack u put in has the same seal and will have the same noise eventually. We were changing racks left and right thats why mb came out w/ that 'improved' seal kit. I hv done several, and havent had one come back yet..just had one that the rubber boot needed modded and greased.

Interesting, I have yet to see a CLK with that issue. Or a 203 or 215 for that matter. We still see a lot of 163's.

OK,

Took the car in to MB Sydney. Replaced rubber seal under warranty. Noise gone. . Hopefully will stay away.
