Just Put in New Denso Iridiums and Magnecor Wires, Car now Ticks loudly!
I just installed new plugs and wires in my 98 C230, and the car is running fine, but I have a loud ticking noise coming from the motor, that was no where near as loud before. I have included some videos for you to listen to to hear what I am talking about. Thanks for the help!

the ticking sounds slow like somthing on the upper end maby valve train. if its not a spark plug wire arking i dont know. ive seen a 104 with a loose plug and the coild was hitting the cover but your coils are bolted down. we did have a 111 engine with a knocking noise and it was the cam advance. sorrry i couldnt be more help. does it get louder with rpm or just faster.

Sounds like it is only running on three cylinders to be honest,as said run the engine in the dark but with the coil cover off to see if there is any arcing.

Sounds like a valve tappet. If you can't see sparking in the dark and none of the plugs are lose I would drive it to see if it stops. The noise is very rythmic and not random which to me doesn't indicate a loose item but mechanical timed movement. Jim

One other thing to try.....if you still have one of the old/original wires...check the resistance on one from each set to see if it's the same. Also, as previously pointed out, tappet noise is common...are you sure it's not that? Can you tell the difference between a tappet and an arc? Arc is like a snapping sound and tappets sound like...well tappets....clicking/ticking.

I did at night with the cover on just to see if I did see anything, the only problem is removing the cover means I have to remove the cross-over pipe. Maybe tonight if I am bored enough, I will.

UPDATE:
I took off the cover once again, and the sound is only coming from the last plug (closest to the firewall)...the one with a coil pack on it. It is a very loud ticking coming from what I believe is the coilpack. Any ideas???...See the new video for reference...thanks and please help! I have also noticed a slight drop in gas mileage.

I don't hear anything like an arc on your clip but then again there's so much noise going on that it could be covered up. Check all the wires/connectors at that plug and remove the plug and look to see if it looks ok....tip, ceramic etc. Look for signs of arcing. Try one of the old plug wires to that plug and see if it goes away. Did you measure the primary wire resistance?

I have been told by a tech (has not seen the car in person) that it could be a spark plug that is not tightened enough. Does that sound legitimate?

Could be, but anything is a guess without someone seeing/hearing it first hand. Easy to check. Don't tighten it too much or you'll strip the aluminum threads or not be able to get it out in the future. Have the mechanic look at it Saturday when you get the other work done.

Alright just came back from a long day in the shop. The following was done:
-Tranmission Fluid Change (highly recommend!)
-DIfferential Fluid Change (highly recommend!)
-Synthetic Oil Change
-Front Wheel Bearings Replacement
-Transmission shifter bushing (if your transmission has too much free play when shifting into gears, then this could be your issue)
-Head Gasket Replacement (in lieu of there being oil in spark plug area)...noise is gone, and I am good to go!
Thanks to everyone for the help!
