does this happen to you?

yesterday, as i did my daily start up, something weird happened...when the temp gauge reached 60, i revved it up to 4k rpm. as the needle was passing 3k, the engine felt like it was gonna die on me. revved it again the same, same thing happened. its like when you reach the rev limiter (that's how it felt and sounded).

You reached the rev limiter.

Electronics will not let you overrev your engine in neutral/park.

There is of course, no reason for and no benefit to doing this, either.

i never over rev my engine specially if its not in the normal operating temp. if you read my post, you'll see there that i onlyy revved it til 4k rpm,if ever i went over it, it shouldn't reach 5k rpm for sure. any more thoughts?

The rev limiter will cut it off early in neutral. Also what you did is not good for the engine, just because the water temp reached 60 does not mean that the oil temp was in fact up to operating temp and at 60 neither was the water temp. Keep it up and it will cost you.

Read my post: your car won't rev over 4K in neutral/park--as designed.

This has NOTHING to do with the red marks on the tach.

4000RPM on an engine that is not up to operating temp can certainly be damaging and from your description the temps were not up to the normal operating range.

The same thing happened to my sold 1999 E55. It is normal.

Whether it is a good thing or not I cannot say. Car owners should be free to destroy their own engines.

I have difficulties interpreting the original post, are you and svt ricco talking about revving at idle or revving on gear (at the start of a daily trip?)?

If it was on-gear, sounds like limp-mode, but then it should have been more than temporary, until restart (or until the issue causing limp home mode was fixed).

at idle..like the earlier post stated, there's a limit on how much you can rev in neutral.

Thanks for the clarification, I didn't see you mentioning "idle" but others interpreting so, perhaps I missed it but anyway now it is clear.
