1982 300D Transmission gone
Can anybody give me advice on what to do with my 1982 300D? I bought it last summer with 328k miles on it. It has run well, is actually in great shape (virtually no rust on body, most of the electrical works) and has been a daily driver for my wife.
However, last week the transmission went--mechanic says it needs to be stripped apart, very expensive... talking a minimum of $1400 labor and could be as much as $4000... He is not sure what the problem is...
I was planning on selling the car by the end of the summer when we will no longer need it. My debate is whether to invest in a rebuilt transmission or try and sell it to someone who would like to fix it up. Any idea what it might be worth? I'm in a quandry about what to do. It cost me $2900 originally and it seems tough to invest up to or more than that again. I like the car, but not that much...

$4000 for a 300D transmission rebuild? If you were in southern California the entire job would be $1400 at worst. These guys have been rebuilding MB transmissions down here for decades. You may want to check with other rebuilders.

If it really is $4000 AND you really only plan to keep it for a few months I could consider looking for a used transmission. Otherwise I would find a shop that can rebuild it. I Can't imagine 4000 to rebuild a auto transmission for a car even a MB that is 25 years old.

. A rebuilt MB transmission can easily cost $6,000 (from the dealer or even AAMCO). Parts are ungodly expensive, and when needle bearings break up (a common failure) they take all kinds of parts with them. As the parts get older (and rarer) they get even more expensive. If you can find a salvage transmission cheap enough, maybe. But there's no guarantee that it won't break in 90 days. I'd walk away.

Personally I would scrap the car. It has no value other than scrap. You should have known that it was likely that you would be the last owner when you purchased it. You have essentially no investment in it so just call the junk man.
