Mobil One turbo diesel truck 5W-40 Oil in auto

Will there be any damage done to use this in my 2001 Mercedes, CLK-430 cab? Friend put this in my car and says it is OK to use. Just want to confirm.

"Friend" may be wrong.

It's not on the list of Mercedes MB229.5 specification oils, which is what Mercedes says your engine requires.

But, it sounds really "macho" to say "turbo diesel truck," right?

He may be getting confused by ESP Formula 5W-40 M-B Spec 229.51. M-B advised their dealers in a parts system bulletin about two years ago to phase it in for both gas and diesel cars and draw down their stocks of 0W-40. However, on the approved service products list ESP Formula 5W-40 carries a notation that it is for diesels only. See the latest list of approved service products for both gas and diesel cars (see the attachment). So it is fairly easy to see how the confusion started.

It's not the correct oil. Have him stick to the M1 0W40...that's probably the easiest to find in retail outlets.

Also adding to the confusion - the September 2006 issue of Factory Approved Service Products did not carry the notation that ESP Formula 5W-40 was restricted to diesels.

Because the problem with using in it gassers hadn't shown up at that time.

Mercedes switched to ESP 5w40, but then switched back to the 0w40 a few months later.

5w40 is fine for this vehicle. now worries. Gullwing. I remember the switch from 0w40 to 5w40 but never back.

The new 299.51 oil was causing problems in gasser vehicles. There's some odd goop forming in cars where gasoline is blended with ethanol. This caused the change back to M1 0W40.

Sorry, this is wrong. 229.5 for gasoline cars and diesels without DPF.

229.51 is a low SAPS formula, it has lower additive levels, it is only for cars with DPF that need it.

If you really want to use a good oil, use Liquimoly or Pentosin.

This is absolutely correct. The Factory Approved Products list I attached on post #3 carries a specific notation that 229.51 is only for diesels. I made this same error because M-B listed 229.51 for both gas and diesel in 2006 and they did not widely advertise the change. Didn't want to broadcast their error maybe??

The funny thing is that a lot of people (myself included) never bought the 229.51 "universal" oil bs. The fact is that the restrictions for the low SAPS oils would only produce negative affects, and I have always advised people to stay away from low SAPS unless they need it.

Another reason why I always bring my own oil to the dealer.
