Why do you need the engine serial number? Most parts are ordered using the Chassis (last 6 of your vin) cutoff numbers.

Here in Australia we need to see the engine number to match it up on records so we can register it ,if we can't tell them the location they will not register it, that is why Im so desperate for it

Thanks

Did you also post on the CLK forum? Surely one of them know where it is at?

Usually its up front on a protruding part of the block not covered by one of the cyl heads. The tab sticking out is maybe 1.5cm x 5cm.

Then of course your dealer or Mercedes mechanic is familiar with the location.

The engine number for the M112/M113 engines is stamped on the block behind the right (passenger) side cylinder head. You may have to remove the intake tube to read it. The stamping looks like it was made by a dot matrix printer; i.e. a series of dots that make up the numbers. It can be hard to read.

Ah yes - it will be on the driver's side down under. Sorry, I don't have a picture.

It is on the engine flange where the transmission bell housing meets the engine block. It is just inboard of the flange where the exhaust manifold connects to the exhaust pipe.

If you can't remove the intake tube it will be nearly impossible to read. You might be able to do so with an inspection mirror and a flashlight, but the image in the mirror will be reversed and it will be easy to get it wrong.

I think Kent's suggestion in post #2 is best for your situation. A subscription is free to US owners, although they do ask for a credit card number. Since you are in Australia I think you should choose the worldwide option, which does cost $12 USD per year. Not only can you get the data card, you will have access to the factory parts catalog.

yes that would be the easiest except here is Oz we have to show the authorities location of the engine number so they can match it on records, its to stop cars being stolen to be used for stolen parts that's why I am so desperate for the location.

Look near the number 4 area. The drive side does not matter.
