Hello all, I purchased a beautiful 2008 E63AMG with only 22,000 miles on it. Its been two months and at 26,000 I noticed some sluggishness on the freeway and it stalled on me. I had it towed to the nearest dealer, it has been a week and all they can tell me is that they have to send pictures to Germany and take direction from them before working on the car. They have verified it is an engine problem, but that is all they can say. This is the first used car I have ever purchased and breaking down on the freeway in an AMG was the last thing I expected. The dealer told me it could take a month to fix the car. Does their story sound right? I appreciate any feedback.
Update: Dealer called today and said it is a broken piston. Is this a rare, isolated case, or can I expect more problems in the future with this engine. This is the first MB I have owned, I chose this car over a Nissan GTR and a CTS-V, I am just a woman that wanted a fast car to get to work in southern California. I need some straight talk about this engine, I was planning on keeping the vehicle forever, but I don't need a lemon!

Your car is still in 4/50k warranty. Don't worry, MB will take care of it, more likely, they will get a new AMG engine in crate from Germany, then swap the engine for you. They spend less time on engine swap than repair the broken piston alone. Must demand a MB loaner to use while your car in their shop. Keep us post. Welcome to MBworld & good luck.Originally Posted by Sommers

I think more information is needed. Sluggishness = equals a broken piston? How is the piston broken that it reduced the engine to firing on 7 rather than 8? Did it come apart and the engine lost compression in that cylinder?
Stalled? Not sure it would stall just by running on 7 cylinders rather than 8. If it did stall - do you mean the engine seized? I think you would have heard quite the bang and the engine digested a piston.
I would definitely get more information and pictures from the dealer ASAP. With that knowledge, you can fight for a crate motor from AMG.

A better but still amateur description of the stall, I was traveling 70mph in fast lane, I noticed a heavy feeling I pulled to slow lane by then I was definitely losing power, but heard no unusual sounds and steering or brakes did not lock up. When I got over to the shoulder it stopped. I put my smart key in the ignition thinking that might be the reason, I was able to turn it over the sound was grumble grumble grumble then stall. I have not heard back from the dealer, but I really appreciate your input and valid points to address with them. Unless of course, they just say they will replace the engine.
Just as you said, the dealer called and said AMG will be shipping a new engine over from Germany. My car has the 6.3 507 and I know they don't make that one anymore, so I'm guessing they have to build a new one, ETA is March 25th, so I'm driving a C class for two months. Oh well...
Thanks for the input, I love this site!

a BRAND new engine is good, but sometimes for resale people get confused...esp when the odometer doesn't match the engine.
