Used wrong bolt set when replacing spare tire...
also this is on a W208 CLK 320 cab right front wheel.
On my car, even the longer lugs on the back would put the spare on except they stick out. If you doubt anything, take one out from the front and one from the rear and compare the thread length to see if they are the same. If they're, nothing to worry about.
The rear wheel on my S500 coupe is a bit wider than the front and a set of shorter lugs is in the tool kit. I am not sure which wheel you are talking about so I don't know why your spare needed shorter lugs.

OUCHY! Never force anything in if it didn't go anymore. The tow company should pay for the damage IMO.
