My exhaust shakes uncontrollably.

My '93 W124 300D rumbles with authority.

Whenever I was on the gas and the RPM's were up, the car would drive smoothly, but when I took my foot off the gas the car would shake, it felt as though the final exhaust would got hrough the exhaust system, and then it would shake like crazy.

At first, I checked the entire exhaust and noticed a whole the size of a quarter so I immediately replaced the resonator "small muffler before the muffler" in Lamen's terms.

Now this made the problem a little better, but the car still shakes more than it should.
Granted it is a diesel, but it shakes too much when you're not on the gas pedal.

Has this happened to anybody? Does anyone have an idea what it could be? Another exhaust peice need to be replaced?

Thanks.

Coil pack? Diesels do not have spark ignitions, therefore, no coil pack.

How is the idle speed? If it's too low, the engine loses "balance" and shakes. Same with a petrol engine. When I turn mine off, it shakes a little before the crankcase completely stops moving.

It idles around 6500-7000 RPM's, right where it always has been and where i'm told it shoulld be.

It only shakes when you're not on the gas. If I am on the gas pedal the car is smooth.
So strange.

When you say it shakes when your off the gas, is it while the car is in gear?

If it is automatic then when you take your foot off the gas it may up change and the revs will drop until you accelerate again. If you are in an auto then select a gear manually and let the engine spin at around 2-3 K without gas.

If it doesnt shake it could be a rough idle or low rpm due to blocked injectors or many other things. If your car is a carb engine then it could be the idle spray thingy that is clogged and the engine wants to stall.

It is hard to say because it could be so many things. You might also need your engine checked out, could be compression or something. Im no expert, so thats all the help i can give. Good luck.
