GL 450 Oil Leaking on Wiring Harness??

I recently brought my 2013 GL450 into the MB dealership because of a check engine light. They did an oil change and service when they went to clear the check engine light they said it kept "throwing 20 codes". After a few days of investigation they called and said there was oil leaking onto the wiring harness and therefore they needed to replace the wiring harness for $7,500 total about $3,500 for parts and $4k for labor. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any alternatives?

The alternative is to trade the car in.. Its actually a pretty common issue with the M278 and M157.. Oil leaks from the camshaft hall sensors and wicks (like a candle) the oil all over the harness to things like the injectors, all sorts of other sensors and even into the ECM.. Mercedes has seen the issue for years..

Do you think $7500 is in the reasonable range for this kind of work?

Additionally, please take a look a this post:
https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...ness-m276.html

I highly suspect that this problem is susceptible to the m276 motor and others that install the same type of camshaft solenoid / sensor.

Mine is a 2013 GL450. I think those are the same engine. The mechanic didn’t charge me for the diagnostic and gave me some practical advice on cleaning the main connector periodically.

There is a thread on this site that talks about superceded part numbers for cam position sensors and cam solenoids. Search for it to see if your vehicle has the latest revisions. From memory, the latest design change was approx 2016, but I could be wrong about that.

My GL450 is at the shop with the same exact issue. They quoted me “around $4K” for a temporary repair, which means it could happen again, or 15K for a complete engine overhaul. I opted for the 4K repair and the service advisor got upset and said they are going to “heavily document” that my engine is defective, then said I had to pay the money up front..Keeps pushing finance options on me. I asked him for a copy of these two estimates and he will not provide one or return my emails or calls now for 3 days. At Mercedes Of Houston North. What is going on!

Get your car and leave! What is a $4k temp repair?

Normal Mercedes dealer behavior, unfortunately. Take your car to another dealer or an independent shop.

The car won’t start so I have to get it towed again and the last shop couldn’t figure out the issue. I was hoping for an estimate so I could at least see for myself in writing what was wrong. I almost think they don’t know and are just charging me the max.

The $4K temp repair was to replace the engine module and degrease the wiring harness, but it won’t stop the oil from leaking out and causing the computer to short out again. i am fearful they aren’t telling the truth and the next shop won’t be able to figure out what was wrong with it.

Once the vehicle is in your possession, a low cost experiment is to pull the ECU connector apart and spray both sides with CRC contact cleaner. Do the same with the cam position sensor connectors and cam solenoids connectors. Let dry, reassemble and see if it starts.

Same advice given to me by my mechanic. Seems to work for a little while, but need to do it every few months. Cheaper than the alternative!

Mechanic says it would be impossible to pin down.

Well F me.

I don't have any problems yet, but I want to squash this out of the way.

Is it just the 4 camshaft magnets, and 2 sensors?

4 cam position sensors and 4 cam position magnets. 8 devices in total.

Found the camshaft sensors. Looks like a 30 minute job if I go slow.

My experience was very disappoint. Took my 2012 CLS550 in for dealer service after smelling odor coming from engine ... on 4 separate occasions. The never found or suspected oil leaking into the wiring harness until the engine light came on. At that point was told the repair would be $8,000 ($2,000 for harness replacement + parts and $6,000 for labor) UNLESS they found oil had spread to computer or other critical engine components ... open-ended cost estimate. Unbelievably, they claimed they claimed that oil leaking into the harness was a "never heard of before" event -- laughable as I read Mercedes-Benz TSB S-SC-2012070002 ...the service campaign bulletin which is spot on about Retrofit Adapter Wiring Harness on Camshaft Adjustment Solenoids. Non-dealer Mercedes mechanic fixed car, including new computer, for $5,000.

Yessiree…I have a 2014 GL450 and was quoted a price of $12,000….The oil leak onto the harness should be considered a factory defect…My GL450 has only 80,000 miles…😡😡😡
