Cranshaft position sensor?

My clk 320 will die when hot(sometimes when cold) and take 5-15 minutes to re-start.No engine codes. The dealer says it must be the Cranshaft position sensor. Has anyone ever heard of this?

the crank sensor would leave a code but it could be a dodgy wire to it shorting out, the wire gets brittle with age because of the heat also the connector get gummed up, next is the main wire harness connector they tend to get damp in there and cause lots of problems, also could be a dirty MAF sensor that causes the problem your haveing

A crank sensor that fails when hot will not set a code. From what you say about your engine shutting off when it gets hot and needing to cool down before it can be started, I'd say your dealer is probably correct. The crank sensor failing on the M112 motors is not uncommon.

very debateable petmerc but possible all the same, generally when the engine is running and it cuts out with ignition on the crank sensor gives a fail code but in most cases its a bogie code and common but as you say it dosnt allways leave that code, the sensor is very easly tested anyway so why is mb guessing its that when all they have to do is test it, its not a good idea for mb to just guess things not very proffessional

Help!!!!!!!

I am having trouble locating the crankshaft position sensor on my 01 c320. can someone please tell me where it is and how to get to it. I have ran into a few posts about it but it is either in a different model or year. I look in the region where they describe it to be and am unsuccessful in finding it

thanks

Copied from this forum but haven't had to replace one on my own yet (my apologies and thanks to the poster):

"Replacement of L5 (crankshaft position sensor) is relatively easy with
proper tools 1/4' 12 inch extension with flex socket on end connected to
another 3" short extension and the proper socket, simply remove air cleaner
assembly and with enough light to follow/see wire behind left cylinder head
remove/loosen bolt holding L5 in place reinstalling by placing grease/white
lube on bolt installing in sensor and then tightening down Note that on
removal a long magnet might aid in retrieving of small bolt that could fall
into abyss on engine Its a simple 15 minute change"

Maybe you can take a picture and post when you find it?
