Bad ignition coil for ML320

My mechanic said my number 5 ignition coil is shot, AND he thinks the second stage in the other 5 are shot too.

How likely is this, and can I buy used parts from salvaged vehicles?

Do not believe this is likely. Have not heard of this problem before especially with all coils. I would have it diagnosed by a dealer with the proper diagnostic equipment. I assume that your guy is an independant. Its very difficult and almost impossible for these guys to diagnose such items unless they have spent the real big bucks for the equipment and thats quite unusual

We've never had problems with the ignition coils from vehicles with V6 (M112) or V8(M113) engines. How did that mechanic determine that it are the coils?

He initially thought it was the coils because the error code from the computer said something like "cylinder #5 misifire"??? It turns out that my '98 model needed some updates to the fuel pump/filter, and the MAF was bad. After replacing the MAF and fuel pump the problem was solved.

I knew it were not the coils. But what is "the maf"?

MAF is the mass air flow sensor and its quite delicate and will fail if mishandled

A defective "maf" will not cause misfiring of one cylinder, rough idle, etc,...

Thats correct, but it will cause very rough running, stalling or not able to start. Then again the fuel pump he stated was replaced would not cause #5 cyl misfire either. Sounds like his "expert" threw parts at it till it ran OK. This is typical of some independant shops that do not really have proper diagnostic equipment.

Excuse me, Sosh, it was Atl_hooligan who had that misfiring.
But I still agree about the equipment (and knowledge).

Patrick, Sorry you misunderstood. My reply was not only to you but also to The guy with the problems. I realize that you do not have these problems
