8 SPEED TRANSMISSION

Just bought a used 2021 GLB 250 for the wife a few weeks ago. I'm curious about what 8 speed transmission is in the vehicle.

Is it a ZF or a different brand?

My 2020 Audi Q3 has an Aisin 8 speed (Japanese I believe) but I think the GLB tranny is more refined shifting, etc.

It is a Mercedes in-house DCT. As for if you want to know who built it for them, it would likely be Magna and the control module is supplied by Bosch.

Appreciate the info. My 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Eco Diesel had an 8 speed ZF tranny and I was impressed by it's quality and smoothness.

You're welcome. Personally, I would like the ZF transmission on an MB as well as I had a bitter experience with MB transmissions across several models, that being said, there should be good ones it is just that is what I experienced. In a way I am glad MB is still making their own transmission, as the more competitors the better and more beneficial to consumers in the long run.

With this being my first Mercedes, I like to know as much info as possible about the car. As a car nut starting with the muscle car era in the 60's I've always been into the details of any vehicle I've owned.
I don't do as much wrenching as I use to, and with the complexity of vehicles now that's probably a good thing.

Fair enough, mechanical wise you can totally do Service A yourself (especially the check fluid level and normal function of lights etc.) you can swap cabin air filters, activated charcoal filters, engine air filters, do your own oil change, bleed the brake fluid, change your brake pads and rotors on these cars without too much effort at all. Even differential fluids or even transmission fluid if you are willing to spend a little more time and have more patience, it is all DIYable. Having Xentry helps in terms of monitoring temperatures during the transmission fluid change though. Edit: That being said, the latter two you have lots of time until you need to change those.

Bought the GLB the 1st part of January. Dealer loaner with 10K miles so service A was completed prior.

The only part of service B that I am concerned with is bleeding the brake fluid. Not sure if the ABS module is bled when doing a fluid exchange by the dealer, and whether a special scan tool is needed for that. Changing cabin filter, oil & filter, and basic inspection is no issue for me. I guess I could do those and have the dealer do the brake fluid exchange. Not sure what the cost for just that procedure would be.

I'm still trying to grasp why there is no specific oil weight given in the owner's manual and no info under the hood. The manual shows spec 229.71 which I think is 0W-20. 229.52 looks to be 5W-30, plus others.

Here in SoCal the temperature extreme is obviously in the summer with possibilties of 100 degrees + so I'm leaning toward the 5W-30 oil. Not sure what the dealer uses for this specific region.

It's the 1st vehicle I've owned not showing a temperature chart and a specified oil weights in the chart.

FYI, my 2020 Audi Q3 specifies 0W-20.

You don't have to use STAR to bleed although it might help, here is a an overview of what to expect provided by this forum:
https://mbworld.org/how-tos/a/merced...e-fluid-386507
Don't just rely on one source of information though, if you are really doing your own brake fluid, always do some more research so you are comfortable with everything.

Yes for the GLB 250, the certification would be MB-Approval 229.51, 229.52, 229.61, 229.71, 229.72 it takes 5.8 US quarts.
MB-Approval 229.51: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...heet/229.51/en
MB-Approval 229.52: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...heet/229.52/en
MB-Approval 229.61: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...heet/229.61/en
MB-Approval 229.71: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...heet/229.71/en
MB-Approval 229.72: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...heet/229.72/en

Yup 5W 30 may work, MB recommends 5W-30 or 5W-40 as long as temperatures aren't constantly freezing, if it is then 0W-30 or 0W-40

Brake fluid you want MB-Approval 331.0 https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...sheet/331.0/en

I will file all this into my GLB 250 folder for reference.
I don't know your location, but I assume you are doing your own oil changes.
Are you using MB oil or another brand that meets MB oil specs?
Filter?
I have used Mobil 1 in most of my previous cars.

I use Liqui Moly in my vehicles, the oil filter I just grab one from the dealership so in other words, oil filter I use OEM. They are basically MANN filters, but I recommend just getting the engine oil filter from the dealership. Motor1 is perfectly adequate though if you want to continue using that. I usually recommend getting the oil kit from FCPEuro if you are from the USA unfortunately it seems like they are currently backordered. Depending on the State that you reside in and the local laws, you might want to keep the receipts for all the engine oil, filters in case you need them later on (just in case they blame owner negligence if you have a small issue that can be addressed through warranty).
There is no real reason to get OEM engine oil from MB though as if I recalled correctly in the USA, it is just Mobil1 rebranded.
Edit: To clarify, blaming owner negligence as in they have no record that oil change was done which then you need to use your receipt as proof.

I will check out the oil change kit.

I have always documented my oil changes with receipts and photos.

I will probably leave the brake fluid change to the dealer.

CYA for the warranty.

Thanks
