Oil filter conundrum new owner

Hi! I am the new owner of a 2015 mercedes benz e400 4matic. Nice meeting you folks! I would like to change the oil, and though it is nice that I don’t have to crawl under the vehicle to access the oil filter, I can’t loosen the D*** plastic oil filter housing. I tried everything. First got an oil filter wrench that was too small. Then got a variable size one that slipped. Now have a 74mm one that is slightly large, put a latex glove around the housing and fits snug but still slips. How do I get it off with damaging it? Also, I plan on using an electric pump to pump out the oil through the dipstick tube so I don’t have to crawl under the car and undo a million screws. Has this been done before? Does it work well?

Yes, all of this and combinations of it have been tried and practiced around MBWorld forums.

The big deal about changing your engine oil every 5kMi is not to save $800... it's to use a better lubricant you favor.

The plastic filter housing with the large O-ring, needs only to be snug... 25NM is destructive for overheated plastics.

Even though I change my own oil and am torque-****, I still keep a spare plastic oil cap in my box of oil filters just in case. The p/n for yours should be 276-1800-038. $35 is cheap insurance in case you crack the cap getting it off.

I finally got it off! Used a strip of plastic mesh to put around the housing and then basically had to hammer the oil filter wrench cap in there! That finally worked. Also used the topsider electric pump to pump out the oil, worked great but took awhile. The only thing I can’t do is CLEAR THE D*** SERVICE REMINDER OUT OF THE COMPUTER!! I tried all of the methods on YouTube, I can get to the ASYST PLUS and when I click on it it tells me I have 670 miles left until AO service. Whatever that means. But I hit ok and no more sub menus, nothing. No way to clear it.

You need to make sure you are in the workshop menu, both are called the ASSYST PLUS menu, the regular (outside of Workshop) is only used to check when the next service is due, it does not let you reset, you need make sure you enter the one in the Workshop menu, in order to get in the Workshop menu, make sure the odometer/trip screen is showing before proceeding with all the buttons/steps to enter the Workshop menu

Make sure you put a slight film of new oil on the O ring before you put the filter cap on again. This will make it much easier to remove next time. And yes, the filter cap doesn't need to be torqued on as if you were tightening a wheel bolt

Yup this is good practice that people ignore or perhaps forget, as for torque if you want to be precise, it is 25nm if I recalled printed on the cap.

Good to hear, what made it work this time, what did you tried differently?
