Transmission BOO-BOO!

2015 mercedes benz e400 4matic. This car is new to me and I was pulling away in first gear and flipped it into reverse by accident thinking I was engaging the windshield wipers. After some strange noises everything was well again but did I do damage to the transmission?

Depending on speed, it shouldn't let you engage reverse. If at low speed say 10km/hr or was it 5? it will let you engage reverse but it will then first make the vehicle come to a stop then reverse.

What @W205C43PFL said. There are protections against putting the car in park or reverse while moving. An exception is if you have the car in Drive and open the driver's door, the transmission will move to Park. I've not tried that while moving, but only when actually stopped.

I don't recommend trying that. For what it is worth, I tried it by accident and the car slammed on the brakes on me and then force the car in Park.

What happened was for some reason I made a mistake and the door wasn't closed fully (so not closed properly, I mean it was closed so the open door message doesn't show up but it was like half closed so if you push outwards the message shows up but the door is basically latched and isn't open, sorry for my terrible explanation).

ANOTHER great reason for soft close doors! If they contact the frame at all, they close automatically. My 2014 C-350 has a physical shift lever, so that doesn't seem to be a problem.

Oh yes, I think MBs are designed with soft close doors in mind to begin with given that we need to kind of slam the doors to have them close properly. I really hate slamming doors though.

good to know, thanks. I was moving slowly, but the car didn’t slam on the brakes. I heard a horrible screeching noise and the car went into neutral.

Could the screeching have been the tires? Seems to me that Mercedes would have built in some protections if this could happen so easily.

You're welcome and

I agree, it could be the tires.

to me it sounded more like something mechanical. Whirring, screeching. Hard to describe. But I don’t think it was the tires.

Maybe the brakes were hard and the rotor made noise? If you are concerned could totally scan the transmission, if there are no codes and depending on when the transmission fluid is due, drain it and check the fluid.
