SubscribeHey everyone,
After pulling together a bunch of forum threads, YouTube videos, and articles on the 722.9 and 722.9 Plus transmissions, I’ve wrapped it all into one concise guide for DIYers. You’ll find everything you need to know in order to find the right parts and oil for your transmission:

Feel free to clone, fork, or submit issues if you spot any typos or have suggestions. My goal is to keep this up‑to‑date as the community uncovers new tricks or part swaps.
Big thanks to everyone whose threads and videos laid the groundwork (johnand, 6o4o, Mercedessource, Geoff Pegg, FCP Euro, etc.). I hope this consolidation saves you a few hours of Googling next time you tackle your 7‑speed service.
Drive safe and happy wrenching!

- Fluid breakdown (MB 236.14 vs. MB 236.15), colors, and tips on verifying your spec
- Quantities you’ll need (pan vs. pan + torque converter)
- Pan version identification (V2 vs. V3) with part numbers for filters, gaskets, overflow tubes, magnets, bolts, plugs, etc.
- Upgrade path for swapping early pans to the late‑model (V3) design
- A few bonus tips — like gasket lubrication to help prevent leaks

Now that is extremely well organized: thank you for your clear research presentation!

As far as the service procedure... here is another way without dropping pan.
The ATF strainer is lifetime grade, line-set is used to drain converter. Pan stays put.

When draining the old fluid and dropping the pan does it matter if the transmission is in park or in Neutral, does more fluid come out with it in Neutral?
I serviced my 4matic transmission last fall mainly to replace a severely rusted pan. I do not like crawling under the car being paranoid it will fall on me so I drove it up wooden ramps I made and was not about to put it in neutral like the instructions say to. Instructions say put transmission in neutral then raise vehicle.
I was lazy and did not drain the TC so have a few quarts of fluid left over. I figure why waste the fluid so I plan on driving it up on the ramps again and just remove the drain plug, drain out whatever comes out then fill it up with the new fluid.
Transmission in Neutral vs Park, will more fluid drain out or the same either way?

There is not a big difference between neutral and park as far as I know (if any?).Originally Posted by TimC300

Park vs neutral, will work either way but it doesn't hurt to follow best practice
You are correct, wrote 2016 since that is the case for the E-class, my bad.
As far as I can tell it was used until 2020. If you have a reference that says otherwise let me know
