Question Questions about buying a car out of state???

How would one safely go about buying a car out of state. I am in Dallas, Texas and that car I am looking at is in South O.C. California. How would I get the money to the seller and deal with the title transfer? I have a shipping company lined up (www.shipyourcarnow.com) they are a site sponsor here and seem to be very highly recommended. I just need to details on the money changing hands and title transfer. The car btw is a 1999 C43 AMG and seller is an older male that is a part of the BMW CCA and owns several BMW racer cars. He seems to be very legit and is providing me with a 200 point inspection by a reputable indi-shop.

You go to him with cash or some form of payment the seller deems acceptable, then you make sure he has a clear title with no lein on it. After all that is done and you find the car in acceptable condition, you pay him and he signs the title over to you. You transport the car home to texas and take the title to the local dmv and register your car. That's it. :p

Will the shipping company act as an escrow (swap the check for the title)? Otherwise, you can ask him to fax/email you a copy of the title and send a check and try to work things out between you. If you're worried about that, call a law office/lawyer near the seller and ask them to broker the deal for you. I would think a real estate attorney would be willing to do it, since that's basically what they do anyway, just with houses.

It comes down to trust. I just bought my 5 55 (CLS55) from a guy in NY and im in Ohio. If you have a name, address, phone number, and you have talked on the phone and so forth, chances are he is legit. Most scams are foreign scum bags in other countries. They will usually only correspond by email. I wired the money from my bank wo I had proof of the transfer. I had him sign a recipt, contract prior to the wire. A quick name search on the internet will tell you if his name matches his address. He probally owns the car outright so he should be able to next day air the title and you should have it before the car even gets there. I know it's nerve racking, I just wired over 40k to a guy I never met and for a car I have never seen. It worked out perfect and the car is spot on!

I'm sorry...am I the only one seeing issues with this? You're willing to buy a car out of state and have it shipped to you via a transport company. Why aren't you willing to pay that 99 dollars and fly on southwest airlines to see the seller to complete the transaction?

I have done it both the way saintz and emoving suggested. The amount involved and your comfort level with the Seller should be factored in to the equation. Clearly, using an attorney as an escrow agent provides a much greater degree of comfort and security, but also adds cost. Trusting the Seller is somewhat uncomfortable, but worked for me. Good luck.
