Sunroof switch
#3
............I actually do not think that any MB has an "auto close" sun roof funtionality. I don't mind being corrected on this. I think it is one of those MB safety features. I guess, they don't want you to suddenly leap up (after you press the closure) button and get your head trapped in the sun roof as it closes. They of course don't mind if you do this with your driver or passenger window.....since these have "auto close" funtionality. They probably think that the blood will be more difficult to clean up if the head liner is involved in the mess.

Yet another of the myriad uses for a significant other or a hitchhiker...to hold the button until it's closed.
At least you can close it with the remote once you get out, but that doesn't help much while accelerating onto the freeway and trying to get it closed!
I agree with the other posts: this is a silly feature, whether or not their argument is based upon safety. I have a friend who's a Denali fiend, his factory sunroof has auto open and close, and the aftermarket sunroof he installed in his other Denali also has auto open and close. As well as 5 memory positions so he can select certain favorite positions.

...........Begining in late 2001, "auto open" feature was introduced in MB vehicles. So any post 2001 ML should have this feature.

You are correct, blood is much harder to clean off of the headliner.

...........if you hold your remote key within 12 inches of the remote eye located next to the driver's side door handle, and if you subsequently depress the door closure button on your remote key and hold it, it will close your windows and your sunroof.

We have an '03 ML55 and it does have the auto-open sunroof. If you tap the sunroof switch once, it opens about 3/4 of the way and stops,in this position it's supposed to reduce the amount of buffeting at high speeds. If you want it opened all the way you have the tap the switch again from the 3/4 position. When the sunroof is fully open, you can tap the switch to close it but it will only close about 4 inches to the 3/4 position, however,it will not automatically close fully from there, you have to hold it. The tilt position isn't automatic.
Also, NO W163 ML's have the open/close feature for the windows and sunroof using the key from outside of the car.
Even the C230 kompressor has automatic close/open/tilt for the sunroof and the close/open feature using the smartkey outside of the car, which makes me wonder why it wasn't available for the W163

Does any one know if it's just the switch that would need to replaced to enable auto-open (moonroof)? Or is the motor specifically designed for auto-open? I found a switch for a 2002 but I have a 2000 and was wondering if auto-open would work with the 2002 version. TIA
