ML63 722.9 Trans-cooler DIY
My latest gripe with the earlier W164 ML63s is that they do not come with a trans oil-cooler. While no CEL came on, and there are no codes in the transmission, temps were getting too high for my liking (sitting at ~120c).
Reading the forums, everyone advises against adding a cooler. Well, I've had coolers on all my other trucks and Mercedes eventually added a cooler themselves. in comes a couple of click on the amazon and a few hours of work on Saturday and temps are now in a better place (~90c)
I was pretty straight forward (a push to connect fitting to connect to the return line on the radiator, a cooler, and some 3/8 transmission hose)
Took the opportunity to also flush and change the filter. Maxlife ATF met the specs and has been shifting smooth since. Everyone do your research, but I was comfortable putting it in my transmission
For a vehicle I use every day, the high milage, a few dollars and some time were well spent to extend the life on this 150k mile transmission
I don't believe in the AMG tax and not to try something new because the keyboard warriors say not to. Go enjoy your vehicles and learn something in the process!

Yeah you definitely want a cooler. What years did not come with the cooler? I’m pretty sure my ‘09 has one so I was surprised to read your post. And I agree with your premise…if it’s not needed why did MB add one to later year ML63s?

Nope, also the cowling is different and has no provision for the lines to come through
Maybe it was a package initially but I known it was standard from 09' on

part number A2115001700 it's update from A2115001600 which is update from A2115000200 and they start setup them from year 2008 which include september 2007 builded cars which is pre-facelift as mine

What can I tell you, not everyone is so lucky to have it spec'd
Here's a video of some guy doing a radiator replacement and its clear as day there is only a power steering cooler and no oil to air cooler for the transmission
