New pulley kits for C32/SLK32 and SL55

For those with factory superchargers like the C32 and the new SL55, ASP is now making pulley kits for those cars. These are pulley kits using your factory damper. The C32/SLK32 kit is $400 and includes 3 pullies and the SL55 is a single pulley so it's only $200 like the C230K/SLK230. If you don't want to donate your factory pulley then it's about $250 more depending on what MB charges for it. No word yet on the 1.8L.

They are very similar to the Renntech kit, you can use their numbers as a guide.

C230 Kompressor (02 Copupe)
hm..

not trying to be an *** here...

but If I spend 110k+ in an SL55 or 70k in a slk 32, I would go with a proven pulley kit from a company like Renntech, Brabus or even Kleeman...

ASP pulleys arent as tested..

yo Rocky,

what are the benefits of adding pulleys?

Does it void factory warranty and any other parts affected?

For the new SL55 that is supercharged, the pulley kit spins the supercharger faster creating more boost and more boost = more power. It's for people that want to go faster than the next guy with an SL55, not for the person that is happy with what he's got and is worried about how the dealer is going to think. Personally my car is up to about 230HP with a pulley kit from 192HP so I can't even imagine what 500HP is like but to some, even 500HP isn't enough. So you have tuners out there help those people out. Think about how happy the people felt on the older AMG SL's when new and now the new AMG SL's comes out and leaves them in the dust.

Do the companies you mentioned even make a pulley kit for the SL55? I think ASP might be first to market on this one.

thanks for the info. However, it does sound very tempting for SL55 owner, and its cheap,BUT to void a factory warranty on a 100K+ dollar car, and then find out that the dealer will blame you for every overstressed and replaced part is pretty risky if you ask me, but personally, to go for more power, you need to go to Brabus/MKB/ At least they give some kind of worthwhile warranty, I doubt anyone will keep their SL55 for more than 3 years.

tough call, but I reckon one should take the T12 6.4 kit from Brabus on a SL600. 640BHP, 1000Nm Torque, and no external changes means its a relative sleeper, then we shall see who wants to snob the AMG owners!

Actually it's more snob appeal to a tuner to make stuff for the higher end cars but actually customers came to ASP and asked them to make it, not the other way around. A pulley kit (anybody's)is just a very quick easy way to make more power and is very easily reversable. As for a 600HP MB, that would be impressive for a factory car but as far as tuner cars go, you would be hard pressed to keep up with some modified Toyota Supras putting that out to the wheels with under $5,000 worth of mods. Pop Science magazine last month showcased a Supra with 1,000 HP (at the wheels).

Although I can see you point about Brabus, although very, very expensive they do have MB's blessing. The problem I've heard is MB will only warranty it if the work is done in Brabuses facility.

i called them ..about 45min away from me. they said only 1 kit has been done for a c32 in Puerto Rico and they didn't have any performance #'s except that the pulley is 10% larger and they install a new water pump to allow the the increase in size

That's with an old design that eliminated the damper. It's been recalled, monies refunded and the damaged party was compensated. Out of all the tuners, ASP offers a full warranty, read Renntech's warranty, they only cover the actual product they sell, not the engine.

Currently they only make pulleys using the factory damper similar to Renntech. The factory pulley/damper has it's grooves machined smooth, a ring is pressed on and then welded for added safety. Then it's re-balanced.

Cheaper or first is not a concern of those with a SL55 or C32. They want a track record of Mercedes knowledge and testing. Wait for a real Mercedes tuner to do the job not some nice guy with a metal lathe or CNC machine. You will save in the long run by going with the right company. I don't see why ASP is trying to go where they are unknowledgable. It's your car choose wisely.

How do you know what's a concern with C32/SL55 owners that's any different than po folk like us? Do you think they like being overcharged for a product anymore than you do? The only person that took a risk with ASP pulleys was ASP. Don't know of anyone that had a problem with an ASP product that wasn't addressed. Compare that with other tuners that instantly blame the customer or the car right on the forum. ASP's reputation must be somewhat good, the SL55 and C32 owners came to them, not the otherway around.

Not to be rude but frankly I don't know why you are so concerned with any performance mods since you haven't done any yourself.

I've bought products from "real Mercedes tuners" and nothing I've bought from them meets any of my expectations for product quality or design. Since you don't buy these products it's easy to put down the ones you think are bad.

i think it may be a good alternative to renntech's pulley.

especially for those that are wary of the solid pulley.

i think it is $1600 for renntech's and this sounds quite safe, since (like renntech) it is a press on ring using the factory pulley.

$650 sounds like a good deal.

maybe evosport will sell the ic reservoir upgrade alone?

What's the ic water reservoir mod? Let me know if you need help installing any pulley kit. I have an OBD2 scanner now so we can drive around and log intake air temps and check to see if you need any intercooler mods.

Not the same thing but you may want to try the the Aquamist water injection. Linh put it on his SLK and the early dyno numbers look good. It sprays a high pressure mist of water/alcohol during high boost. It lowers the temps of the air/fuel charge significantly and buffers any possible start of detonation, a valuable tool for the poor excuse of 91 octane they sell in California. These kits normally sell for about $600 but I found a guy on ebay selling them for $420. Evosport used it on an M3 project and it was featured in a magazine article.

IMHO the REAL mercedes tuner charges WAYYY too much. i reallie appreciate ASP coming out w/prodcuts that will challege the so-called REAL mercedes tuner. if they work the same and cost half as much. you can go pay for another 800 just for the name. its not like they are going to warrenty your engine anyway. since ASP is... i will think they have confidence in their product! that is a good way to do business.

ROCK ON ASP! let us C32 people know what you can do to our cars.

If the ASP pulley is 10% larger than stock, it will create less boost than the Evosport pulley because it is 13% larger. Less boost means less power but also less heat meaning that there is less of a chance to see detonation.

Evosport asserts that the stock intercooler and reservoir capacity is very inefficient. Personally, I've heard mixed stories on it. Increasing the size of the reservoir simply delays heat soak and would also take longer to cool, a gallon of water at 100 C will take longer to cool than a quart at 100 C. So while it may be fine on a 1/4 mile track, on a road course it would quickly not make any difference.

I suspect that even on 91 octane fuel, a 10% larger pulley will not cause any detonation. However, if you are concerned, you can always use an octane booster. Amsoil makes a very effective product called Amsoil Series 2000 octane booster. It is the best back for the buck in octane boosters and will take 91 octane fuel to a little better than 94 octane. Here is a link which discusses the effectiveness of different octane boosters: http://www.fbody.com/members/stevenm...ne_booster.htm

I dont know any SLK32 that cost 70K. you must have your facts all messed up. And If I had a C32 or SLK32 I would put in an ASP pulley. I have heard no complaints with them ever.
Just thought I would share my few pennys.

I don't know the size of the C32 pulley but the ASP adds close to an inch to the factory pulley, it uses 3 pulleys like the other kits so I would imagine it's the same size. One thing ASP will do that most tuners won't, they'll make it any size you want (if it doesn't fit then it's your own fault). Now I can't speak for the the C32 but on the 2.3L motor, the a/f ratio goes from about 12.5:1 to about 14:1 with the added boost, combine that with additional heat from the s/c, it may at least pay to have it checked after you install a pulley kit. That's not dangerously lean and most of the time you are running zero boost so it's not a big issue, even at high revs the boost is bypassed unless you have the throttle at close to wide open.

If someone in So. Cal. wants me to log their air intake temps I can, just takes a few quick runs to 80-90 mph as you drive and I can show you your intake air temps, timing advance, mass air flow. It's easy to do this on a dyno, the problem is it's hard to simulate real life conditions with a coupe of fans.

As for higher octane, I've tried pure 100 unleaded and it didn't make a difference. When you add a pulley to a 2.3L, HP seems to decrease above about 5,500 rpm, don't know why, it's not pulling back timing or detonating, fuel mixture actually gets a little richer at that point. So I tried the 100 octane and got similar results.

Irvine, an alternative to intercooler mods is a mister for the intercooler, don't know if that works with water/air intercoolers or not but I'm working on it for my car. I attached a mister nozzle in front of the intercooler and I've been looking for the right reservoir/pump to make it happen. I was going to use the windshield washer reservoir like they do on Audi's but on MBs it's heated.
