You could upgrade the kompressor pulley and get a chip. THat would probably get you close to 30 more hp.

Im working on a kit that will do about 5 to 10 HP for about $50 us. not too bad concidering any other upgrade is gona run about $100+ per 1 HP. More details will follow as I do some more testing, I just dont feel like sitting around for years till these tuners find time to make this stuff up.

Isn't the 1.8K motor running 11 pounds boost stock from MB ?

For that kind of money I would get a guaranttee with before/after dynos. I don't believe you can get 17HP from their muffler (I show no gains) and their ECU unless is a momentary spike at a certain RPM. Trust but verify!

As for boost, the only way you'll know what your boost is on the '03 is to buy a boost gauge and see for yourself. Pep Boys sells one for under $15. Takes about 10-15 minutes to rig it up temporarily to check your boost. If it' true that it's the same s/c as the 2.3L and you are pushing 11 PSI, then that s/c is maxed out, no hope for a magic pulley. If you are near me in So Cal I can rig up mine for you to see.

You can get an aftermarket intercooler, the only performance part that works on both the '02 and '03. When heat soaked the stock IC loses as much as 15 HP.

The 160 hp version of the 1.8L runs at stock 10PSI, ~ 30% more than the old M111-based 2.0L version. Thus, there is indeed less room to go up compared to the 'lazy' M111 series, maybe to 12PSI. A larger intercooler may be worthwhile investment, along with a freer-flowiing intake and exhaust. Vaeth.com have a larger IC for the new 180, as well as some exhaust goodies.

i did some research on the c180. the largest problem that the compression ratio is 11.2 (!), so not too much place for more boost. i think what i will do is to lower the CR to ~9.0 (by exchanging the seal) and change the pulley. we will see how it will turn out.

Compression ratios

No, according to MB's website, the M271 1.8L with 143 DIN hp has a ratio of 10.6:1, the 1.8L with 163 hp 9.5:1, and the most powerful 192 hp version only 9.0:1. Thus, there's room although it may be not as much as for the old 2.3L. Installing a larger pulley on these engines may be a bit more difficult, the intake pipe is running just in front of the pulleys (the compressor now sits on the intake site, not above the exhaust s in the old M111)

The US Spec 1.8L-Kompressor motor in the Coupe and Sedan have a static compression ratio 8.7:1(10.2:1 for the rest of the world). I can't find anything on any MB site about the amount of boost each Supercharger provides.

and "seen" has a EU-spec car. Also, I got my sources for the boost figures

for the 143 - 192hp range.

Thanks, I knew the 1.8-K motor with 189HP(US Specs) was up there. Now all my 99' SLK needs is the 6200RPM redline of the 2003SLK.
