Transmission Update done right FINALLY

After two trips to the dealer my tranny still did not feel right. I finally brought it to different dealer in NJ. They introduced me to their transmission specialist . He said that I did not have the newest version of the software and that also the ECU also needed update. So make sure you ask for both Transmission and and ECU software update. They seem to go together if you want smoother shifts.

Mitaka,

What were your symptoms? My 07 R500 downshifts abruptly just before I come to a full stop. I notice it most when I am trying to come to a gentle stop.

I always felt somewhat of rough shift between 1st and 2nd gear. Actually there is this sudden surge of power at 1800 rpm. Even if you held 1st gear in manual mode there will be a sudden loss of power at about 1800 rpm for a fraction of a second and then the car will continue in first gear. You felt a push. Now with the software update it is much better as the car relearns the shifting patterns. I never really experienced much of the downshifting issues but it has happened occasionally. I know some people experience them all the time. A friend of mine said that he could never come to a complete stop without a rough downshift on his ML 350. The bottom line is that this is nature of the 7 speed tranny. I think it acts very much like a manual gearbox. The latest software updates cover up these imperfections a great deal. The bad part is that first dealer I was going to didn't really know what software version to put on my car. I had to find a tranny specialist in a different dealership through a friend of mine to get this issue resolved. Try driving yours in first and let me know if you feel anything right at 1800 rpm.

i think most ppl have it, but don't notice it.

for example... the command system makes this buzzing sound you can hear if you put your ear next to it with the mute button on.

i can hear it when i'm playing music so it drives me nuts.

everyone else says they can't hear it when the music plays, only when you put your ear next to it and listen.

and when you turn the power off, the buzzing goes away.

Put your tranny on "C" intead of "S" mode and see if it goes away. I had that same issue and someone on this board gave this advise and it worked for me.

03BABY and Others -

When I had transmission "roughness" it'd occured in either C/S mode, either upshift/downshif between 2nd-to-3rd gears, at 20 - 30 mph. I took the car to the dealers (3 trips, 2 different dealers) and got the transmission software updates and/or re-adaptations. I noticed one thing, though, after the service update the gears changing can get a little rough but should go away and completely gone after you driven 500 miles or so. This is according to the latest update that I had when the car had 1,800 miles. By the time my car got to 2,300 - 2,500 miles, all the roughness were gone. Now my car has over 7,000 miles and the transmission is smooth as "silk" in either S or C modes. From the last software update that I had, a very good Service Tech explained to me that the car needs few hundred miles following the adapatation to learn and adapt itself to the driver/owner driving style and initial roughness is normal but should be gone/cure after a few hundred miles.

So if your car transmission is "rough" or "jerky", take it to the dealer or dealers and get it fixed while still covered under warranty. Why wait or limit yourself to only C or S mode?

Hope this helps.

Yes it takes about 500 miles

I agree. It takes about 500 miles or more. I prefer S mode. I do not like the idea starting in 2nd gear. Thats what happens if you drive in C mode. First gear is not used.
